Roger Savage Obituary

Roger D. Savage

Virginia Beach - Roger Savage died peacefully surrounded by family in his home on Kempsville Greens Golf Course on Friday, November 18, 2016, in Virginia Beach, VA, at the age of 60, from Alzheimer's disease.

Roger is survived by his wife Winnie Savage; his faithful companion, Hailey; daughter and son-in-law, Heidi & John Bickley, of Virginia Beach, VA, daughter and son-in-law, Janan & Giuseppe Scafidi, of Richmond, VA, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Katie Savage, of Bonaire, GA and son, Roger Savage Jr., of Hertford, NC; brother and sister-in-law, Billy & Brenda Savage, of Suffolk, VA; and five grandchildren, Zack Smith, Nathan Smith, Aubrey Bickley, Provvidenza "Enza" Scafidi and Pia Scafidi. He is preceded in death by his mother Rachel Conrad, of Merritt Island, FL.

Roger was born on October 29, 1956 in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Kempsville High School in 1975. He married Winnie, the love of his life, in 1983. He worked for UPS for 26 years. His children remember him as a wise father, always ready with a great sense of humor, who supported them no matter which path they chose in life.

To say Roger was was an avid golfer would be a huge understatement. Not only did he take the game and make it his own with an unorthodox playing style, but he shared his love for golf with everyone he met. He had 14 actual holes-in-one, two of them on par fours. He was even able to play Augusta National (a lifelong dream), hitting 13 & 15 in two, playing the back tees just to see if he could do it, and putting with a 3-iron (his signature style) all the way through. His love for the game and fun-loving personality preceded him, so much so, that everywhere he went he would find old friends. His brother Billy, who has consistently been by his side on his journey through Alzheimer's, is his biggest fan and golf stat-keeper.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers and hospice staff for their efforts, care, and dedication.

A service is scheduled for 10am on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, in the Anderson Bayview Room at Westminster Canterbury at 3100 Shore Dr, Virginia Beach, VA, with a reception to follow. Reverend Dr. Greg Dalle-Tezze & Reverend James Coleman will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Roger's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Virginia Beach Project Lifesaver, at 2509 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456 and The Southeastern Virginia Chapter of Alzheimer's Association at 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502. I only played with Roger a handful times, but I knew him pretty well during the times that I used play the weekend blitz with the guys at Kempsville in the 1990's. I was a sailor off a ship who didn't know anyone, and Roger made me feel like a lifelong friend. He was one of the most decent human beings I have ever met on a golf course. His character was larger than his game, and Roger could really play.

My deepest condolences go out to Billy,Winnie and all of Roger's family and friends.Although I moved out of the area in 1984 I have a lot of fond memories of Roger from back in the early to mid 70's during our high school and junior golf days.I was very sorry to hear he had passed away.He was a great competitor and an inspiration to have as a playing partner.A real life golf legend in the Tidewater area over the past 40 years or more.Even though he had an unusual grip and stance he had all the shots and was able to pull them off when he needed to.Overall a great down to earth guy to be around.I was fortunate enough to run into Roger a few times in the last 5 years while visiting my sisters and mother. She too was a victim of Alz and passed away 3 1/2 years ago.My oldest sister was on Roger's ups route and also thought very highly of him and was very sad to hear of his passing. Thanks for all the memories my friend.RIP Roger

I have so many wonderful memories playing with Roger in many rounds over the years. He was always a gentleman and we enjoyed each others company. He even talked me into putting with my 3 iron one tournament and it actually helped. To all his family I wish you the best.

I work for Ups, for years and years he worked at the belt right in front of me, when I was angry, impatient, disgruntled I always looked up at the other side of the belt, there was Roger preparing his work area calm and always collect, ready to answer any question with same patience day after day. I was often angry at my trucks load, co workers, managers while he got the same treatment day after day, month after month, he never ever lost his coolness, that calm collect demeanor what made Roger. He truly inspired me to become patient man and accept the things I cannot change. One day I approached him at work and told him, I said Roger you truly inspired me to be patient and accept the things that I cannot change in my life. Just looking at you made me realize world around you cannot put a burden on you if you do not accept. He smiled and said thank you. That was Roger, he inspired and teach us with his actions. He was a true friend and a role model. God bless you Roger, rest in peace. I still look at the other side of the belt everyday. Thank you...
