Dr. Ann Marie Toloczko
01/16/1953 - 11/07/2020
Ann Marie Toloczko, PhD, of Pocono Township, passed away at home on November 7, 2020.
Born January 16, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Peter S. Toloczko and Bertha M. Zaikowski Toloczko of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was a graduate of Marymount High School, the parish school of Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church (now Our Lady of Hope). She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology from Marywood College (University). She earned her doctorate, PhD, in counseling psychology from Lehigh University.
She was employed at Pocono Hospital, East Stroudsburg, Pa., until founding Pocono Psychological Associates, with her colleague and friend the late S. Jane Driscoll. She taught courses in psychology at Northampton County Community College and East Stroudsburg University. In 1992 she joined the faculty of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at The University of Scranton, retiring as an associate professor in 2012 due to illness. While at the University of Scranton she was the Counseling and Human Services Program Director for many years, and led the program to its first national accreditation. Many students were touched by her dynamic teaching and caring presence. Ann Marie was a frequent presenter at state and national counseling conferences. In 2012 she received the Order of Pro Deo et Universitate Award at the University, acknowledging 20 years of service.
Ann Marie is survived by her sister Dr. Agnes Toloczko Cardoni and husband John, of Dupont; nephew and godson Christopher Allan, also of Dupont; Kathleen Serafin, companion and caregiver, at home; cousins and numerous friends, especially her Marywood cohort, who visited her frequently.
The funeral will be private, at the convenience of the family.

When I started at the University of Scranton, I was an undeclared major without much direction for my future career. My freshman year, Dr. T was my professor in an introduction counseling and human services class. Hearing her talk with such passion for the field made me realize my calling was also in the helping profession. She challenged each of us to be the best version of ourselves and to be unapologetic for being our authentic selves. Dr. T’s compassion and support was always there with a smile and a good dose of humor. Keeping you and your loved ones in my prayers

Dear Agnes, Kathleen and all family. I do know the difficult time Ann Marie has had over the past few years. She was one of the brightest, most outstanding women that I ever met. We ran for student office together and shared a million laughs together.

Thank you Ann Marie for who you are....and the star that is still YOU, shining brightly.

One of my favorite memories of Annie was at a Memorial Day picnic. We were playing wiffle ball and Annie was up at bat. She was laughing and trying to hit the ball - you know her, she loved golf and was competitive. Her laugh and funky earrings were always present. We will miss her so much. My heart goes out to you Aunt Kathy. I pray she shows you signs daily. Love, Kyle, Chris, Colin, Gavin and Dylan

Dr. T taught me for one class during my time at the University of Scranton, but that was all that was needed to have an impact on my life. We remember the teachers who change us and help us see things from a different perspective. Dr T was one of those people for me. So sorry to hear of her passing, but what an impact she has made. Keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
