Floyd Murphy Obituary

Floyd Miller Murphy, Jr. was born on June 5, 1930, in Miami, OK. Known by many as "Murph", he grew up in Tulsa, OK where he graduated from Tulsa Centre High School in 1948 where he was captain of the Braves Football Team. He attended the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship and was a member of the 1950 National Championship team. In addition, he was a member of the 1951 College World Series baseball team. He entered the Army in 1953 and served in the Korean and Vietnam War. He retired as Lt. Col. in 1975 and moved to Cedartown, GA. Later he was an instructor of Automotive Mechanics at Caters Mill and Coosa High School in Rome. He retired in 1992. Murphy was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church and served on the vestry for many years. He is survived by his stepdaughter Laura Erickson (Jerry) and her son Winston Wood; stepson Bill Hammond and his children Ryan Hammond, Anna Pierce (Greg) and Jade Hammond (Levi) along with 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Almira "Gene" Murphy; parents, Floyd Miller Murphy, Sr. and Viola MeGee; two sisters, Jackie Broadway and Joan Ross and his brother, Pat Murphy.

The family will host a memorial service on Saturday, September 28 at 11:00 AM from St. James Episcopal Church in Cedartown, 302 West Ave. Cedartown, GA 30125.

The family requests in lieu of flowers donations to be given to St. James Episcopal Church fund. P.O. Box 85 Cedartown, GA 30125.

Cremation services are entrusted to Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel & Crematory of Buchanan.
