Ellen Bleier Obituary

Bleier, Ellen Jean (Grandpre)

Ellen Joan (Grandpre) Bleier, age 92, passed away in Mill Valley, CA on January 19, 2015.

She is survived by her four children, Rocky (Jan) Bleier, Pittsburgh, PA; Pat (Paul) Rechner, Appleton, WI; Dan Bleier, Goa, India; Pamela Bleier (Gary Van Acker), Mill Valley, CA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Ellen grew up as part of a farming family in Marshall, MN. At the age of 18, she relocated to Appleton, WI, where she soon met her late husband, Bob. After they were married, they partnered again in starting and building the family business...the popular restaurant and bar "Bleier's".

Upon their "initial" retirement Ellen and Bob moved to Mill Valley, CA. She soon embarked on her next career as she began working with her son-in-law, Gary, to start Van Acker Construction. Ellen dedicated her immense energy and talents to setting-up and managing the office of the Company. She "finally" retired in 2003 at the age of 80 after making a significant contribution to the success of Van Acker.

Throughout her life some form of exercise was a vital part of Ellen's regular routine. She continued to hike the trails around Mill Valley until quite recently. Ellen was a voracious reader and was always thoroughly informed regarding all current events. Over the years she knit countless items for many family members, particularly grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of these are considered treasures by those who have received them.

Ellen will be remembered for her biting sense of humor, her staunch political position, her loyalty to her family and close friends, and her unshakeable faith in God. She will be dearly missed and loved by family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Ellen's name at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 3 Oakdale Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941.

To my friend and former teammate, Rocky and all of the family members: Reading the life of her is a testament to her legacy and the saying that we should "celebrate her life", not mourn her passing. Her love of family, her commitment to a productive and healthy life, and living a Godly life are documented. May she now rest in peace and her legacy live on. I am just happy to have met her, along with Bob Adams, another Steeler teammate back in the early '70s. She has left her mark on us all.

Ellen more than left her mark for her family and others to follow. I am veryl proud to have experienced a lovely fish dinner in Bleier's Bar and Restaurant the day before the Steelers played Green Bay in 71. And to have shared the experience with her son, Rocky, Warren Bankston and other Steeler players was a grand affair. Meeting Rocky's parents, Ellen and Bob, was the highlight of our trip to Appleton. Her spirit will live on and on.

Rocky, Pat, Dan, and Pam, our deepest sympathies in losing your Mom, a great lady. While your charasmatic dad was the front man at Bleier's, your mom ran the show with great success. Bleier's served the best Friday fish fries in the valley and had the best Tom & Jerry recipe. Our Dad, Clay, worked there part-time besides his full time job during the Packers' golden years in the 60's. (We lost Mom in 05/2003 and Dad, 12/2013.) On behalf of my brothers, Clay, Rod, Bob and myself, God bless and treasure the memories.

Rock, Pat, Dan and Pam,
Thinking of you all in this sad time. I have wonderful memories of your mom, in particular her smiley demeanor and joyful laugh. Growing up she was like my second mom. Wish I could be there with you to express my heartfelt condolences. God bless your Mom and all of you. Love, Paul
