Marcus Roskom Obituary

Roskom, Marcus F.

Marcus Frank Roskom, formerly of Little Chute, currently of Wisconsin Veterans Home, King, age 95, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016.

Marcus was born April 26, 1920, in Howard, WI. His mother and father were Anna (Cump) and Peter Roskom. Marcus had eight brothers, Earl, Leo, Arnold, Floyd, Aloyous, Donald, Claude and Levi, and two sisters, Arvilla and Genivieve. They grew up on a farm and later moved to Seymour, WI.

Marcus was drafted into service during WWII at the age of 22, sent to Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and later to Camp Blanding Infantry, Florida. There, his unit headed out on Tennessee Maneuvers and soon called to England. Marcus served at the rank of Sergeant and transferred with his unit to France on D-Day. He fought six months later in the Battle of the Bulge at Normandy where his unit "got the s**t kicked out of them." Wounded, with shrapnel remaining in his leg throughout his life, he was flown from Paris to a London hospital where he spent Christmas, as a ship he was to have been on sunk in the English Channel. Recovering after two months, Marcus was sent back to the front lines. For his injuries, Marcus was awarded the Purple Heart.

After the war, Marcus married Dorothy (Vande Corput) June 12, 1948. Together they lived in Kimberly and Little Chute, WI. Marcus is survived by six children, Aloyous (Carolyn), Kathryn (Marlowe) Greening, Kristine, Terrance, Victoria (friend Russ) and Michael (Sun-Cha). He has ten grandchildren, Nicole (Alan) Ziepke, Dr. Tim (TJ) LaFave Jr, Monica (Jamey) Gosz, Jeff Roskom, Doug Roskom, Tara Roskom, Charles Roskom, Ritchie Greening, Calvinn (Melissa) Greening, and Pamella (James) Burk. Marcus also has thirteen great grandchildren. He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church and St. John Nepomucene Church.

He was a commercial painter, proficient with woodworking, and enjoyed bowling, gardening, playing poker and sheepshead.

Survivors include his brothers: Claude (Gladys) and Levi (Alice); sister: Arvilla (Ted) Haase; brother-in-law: Joe Vande Corput; and sister-in-law: Shirley Roskom.

In addition to his parents, Marcus was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 2013; great grandson Noah; and many brothers, sisters and other relatives.

Visitation begins at 9:00 AM Monday March 28, 2016 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St Little Chute) until Mass at 11:00. The Rev. Msgr. James Vanden Hogen will officiate. Military rites conducted by the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 will immediately follow. Committal St. John Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Marcus' friend George Boatwright, the Cookie Lady, and the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, especially McArthur Hall 2 West. You were all special to him.

I'm sorry I was unable to make it to Uncle Marcus funeral. Ron and I were in Iowa. The last time we talked was at Dorothy's funeral. We talked about how hard of work being a painter was because that is what Ron and I do for a living also. How special it was to have been able to visit Dorothy with Uncle Joe VandeCorput along with both my parents John & Peggy VandeCorput. She was able to name each and every one of us. She talked about her grandson running around her bed calling her home to heaven. By the time we returned back to my parents we got a call that she had passed. It was so special to have seen her so shortly before her passing. I'd like to send a gift but not sure what family member is taking care of the gifts. Please let me know who to send it too. Love, Ron & Robin Fischer you can reach me via e-mail

Marc and Dorothy were always so wonderful to us. I loved coming home from work to talk flowers and plants with Marc and recipes and kids with Dorothy. I have missed them since we moved. My sympathies to the family. I bet he is having a great time in heaven with Dorothy and Noah. May you find peace in the wonderful memories.
