Michael Egerer Obituary

Michael Hugh Egerer, 67, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 25, 2017, after a short illness. He was born Oct. 9, 1949, in Bethesda, Maryland, the son of Lt. Cmdr. (retired) Ernest Egerer and Minnie Rose Egerer. His father was a career Navy officer who fought in three different wars.

After graduating from Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C., (1967), Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army and was accepted into Officer Candidate School. He successfully completed the course and graduated as a second lieutenant. He then served for four more years and was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant in 1973.

Mike attended George Mason University (Fairfax, Virginia) after his military service and graduated from there with a degree in business when he was 27 (1976). He also earned an MBA degree from Temple University.

After earning his degrees and his CPA, Mike went to work for Coopers and Lybrand. But in terms of his career, he was somewhat of a renaissance man. He worked for many different employers in all kinds of industries. When he lived in Pittsburgh, he owned more than a dozen different restaurants, ranging from pizza places to high-end dining establishments. When he moved back to Virginia, he became a specialist at buying failing businesses and making them successful again. Before his retirement, Mike was the CEO of BlackHill Solutions in Reston, Virginia. Mike called many places home, including Washington, D.C.; Texas; California; New York; Pennsylvania; West Virginia; and Virginia.

The great love of his life was Melanie Berrett, whom he married July 19, 2008, in Salt Lake City. Less than two years later (March 13, 2010), they returned to have their marriage solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Since joining the LDS Church in 2009, Mike was involved in a number of assignments, usually involving the youth, especially the Boy Scouts. He loved all of the young people he met at church (and their parents) and was always generous in sharing his time, talents and resources with them. Most recently, Mike and Melanie have been involved as workers in the Washington, D.C., LDS Temple. He also served for four years as a deputy district Scout commissioner and enjoyed working on the advancement committee and helping scouts earn their Eagle award. As a reward for obtaining their Eagle, Michael gave many of them a Henry Repeating Rifle, Golden Boy Eagle Scout Tribute Edition.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, who are both buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Melanie; a brother, Timothy E. Egerer (Donna); a sister, Patricia Ann Wilson, and her children, Kathleen Wilson and Michael Wilson; a son, Aaron Allen; Aaron's son, Colton; and other assorted nieces, nephews and family pets. Mike will be deeply missed by his family, friends, associates and his favorite nephew, Clint Hobley.

Graveside will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in Annis-Little Butte Cemetery, Rigby, under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
