Ascold Kalme Obituary

EASTON * Ascold Kalme passed on into the next life on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, after a long suffering with complications from Parkinson's disease.

Ascold was born in Estonia on March 5, 1924. When political unrest and war with Russia came to his homeland, he fled to Finland and served in the Finnish army against Russia. He then moved to Sweden and worked in a steel factory. Seeking political freedom, Ascold and a small group of friends set sail in a small boat on a precarious voyage to America. With the help of fellow Estonians and his wife, he learned English and dairying. He continued as a dairy farmer in Easton.

It was with great pride that he earned and was granted United States citizenship. With the confidence that this citizenship gave him, he proudly traveled to his native and now independent Estonia to visit his surviving sisters and their families. On the same trip, he and his wife visited their daughter, Anna, in Spain at the time of the birth of a granddaughter.

Ascold is survived by his wife and caregiver, Harriet Bapp Kalme and their family: Neeme and his daughters ,Ashlee, Chelsee and Kaylee of Easton; Anna and her daughters, Sabrina and Natalia in Spain; Harvey and his son, Andrew, of Mechanicville; and Neasa in Indiana. Not having birth family in America, Harriet's family became his, so he is survived by her sister, Ruth Creedan and her husband, of Florida; and her brothers, Robert of Glens Falls, Donald and his wife, Peggy, Richard and his wife, Sharon, Peter and his wife, Sylvia and several nieces and nephews in Queensbury.

Calling hours will be on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Flynn Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main St., Greenwich, followed by a graveside service at Greenwich Cemetery, with Jean Malone, Washington County Hospice counselor.

Memorials in Mr. Kalme's name may be directed to the Easton Greenwich Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 84, Greenwich, NY 12834 or to Washington County Hospice, 415 Lower Main St., Hudson Falls, NY 12839.

Online remembrances may be sent to www.flynnbrosinc.com.
