Benjamin E. Bragg

Highland - Benjamin E. Bragg, a man who was dedicated to his family, nation, & community passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family November 24, 2018 at the age of 94. He was born August 10th, 1924 to Frederick & Bertha (Litts) Bragg. He graduated from Highland High School in June of 1942 and was drafted at the age of 18 . He started his service November 1942 during WWII. It wasn't easy to say goodbye to his parents and his sweetheart cheerleader Rosalie Rizzo.

He was assigned to the 742nd Field Artillery Battery B attached to General Patton's 3rd army. He was a line corporal running wire for telephone communication. He fought many battles including the Battle of the Bulge and continued into Germany where he helped liberate the concentration camps at Dachau & Auschwitz. The sight haunted him for many years.

He returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Rosalie Rizzo, on September 8, 1946. She predeceased him in 2004. Together they founded Bragg's Electric Service, which is still in existence today.

He was very active in his community. He was past Assistant Chief and the oldest Lifetime Member of the Highland Hose Company. Ben was one of the founders of the Highland Little League and the American Legion Post 193. He was an active member of the legion for 71 continuous years. He was past County Commander and the Commander of Post 193 several time and Post Chaplain. He received the Legioneer of the Year award in 1997. He was on the Board of Education for 5 years during the construction of the Elementary School and served 9 years on the town board as a councilman. He was also a long time member of the Ulster County Republican Committee and on the Board of Trustees of the Lloyd Cemetery.

He was honored by the following: Ulster County School Board Association "Friend of Education Award"; the Highland Central School District "Highland Hero".

He is survived by his 4 children Benjamin Bragg (Kathleen), Patricia Scott (Brad), Dennis Bragg (Patricia) all of Highland and Robert Bragg of Pompano Beach, FL. He is also survived by his grandchildren Benjamin Bragg (Heather), Michael Bragg (Nicole), Brad Scott, Tara Crowder, Kyle Bragg (Heidi), and Heather Bragg. And great grandchildren, Ashley (Alex), Jordan, Maison, Myla, Zac, Beau, and Adam. He was predeceased by his brothers Fredrick, George, sister Bertha and granddaughter Shawn.

Special thanks to Melody Jarett for the excellent care and peace of mind she provided to Ben and our family during his declining health.

Memorial Donations may be made to the American Legion Lloyd Post 193, 84 Grand St., Highland, NY 12528.

Calling hours will take place on Thursday November 29th from 2-9 pm at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 38 Main St. Highland, NY 1528.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday November 30th, 10:00 am at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Highland.

Burial will follow at Union Cemetery of Lloyd in Highland, with military honors.

In reading our hometown papers online today, I learned of the passing of
Mr. Bragg. To the family, we are sorry for your loss. It was a pleasure to have known Mr. Bragg. My family was grateful that he was a positive role model and example of a great American for my son. We met him through his work with the American Legion. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of your father. He was a pillar in our community and all of us should be thankful for everything he did for Highland. I have many good memories of Mr. Bragg especially from HHS sporting events and Little League. RIP Mr. Bragg. You will be missed.
