Francesca Coppola Obituary

Francesca Coppola

Hyde Park - Francesca Coppola (née Mazzella), devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully at home on May 8th, 2021.

Francesca was born on the 4th of January, 1940, on the island of Ischia, just off the coast of Naples, Italy, where she spent the first 16 years of her life with her parents, Concetta Amalfitano and Giovanni Giuseppe Mazzella, her five sisters and one brother.

In 1956, at the age of 15, Francesca immigrated to the United States with her father and two sisters, Vicenza and Maria. They arrived in New York Harbor on Thanksgiving Day and traveled north to settle in Marlboro, New York. At the age of 16, Francesca met her future husband, Antonio Coppola, and his brother Joe, on a bus to Newburgh, where she worked at a pocketbook factory. Francesca eventually married Antonio, and her two sisters, Maria and Rafaella, married Antonio's brothers, Joseph and Vincent. Together, the three couples opened Coppola's Restaurant on Main Street, Poughkeepsie in 1961.

Francesca is survived by Antonio, her devoted and loving husband of 62 years, and five sons; Nicola (Julie), John (Cecelia), Antonio Jr. (Elizabeth), Luigi (Lisa), and Vincent (Melissa). She was the doting grandmother of 15 grandchildren; Christopher, Francesca, Giancarlo, Michael, Dominic, John Joseph, Anna, Anthony, Jack, Marcanthony, Claudio (deceased), Geno, Clara, Nicole, Christina, Eric, and Danielle. Francesca is also survived by sisters Lina Coppola, Tina Palumbo, Nancy Coen, Antonietta Fattore and husband Italo, brother Luigi Mazzella and wife Teresa, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Giovanni Giuseppe and Concetta Mazzella, sister Maria Coppola, and brothers-in-law, Joe and Vincent Coppola, Frank Palumbo, Art Cohen, and beloved grandson, Claudio.

Quick with a smile, our mother was the quintessential optimist. She taught us to laugh out loud, cry quietly, follow our heart, and enjoy the little things. After a bad day, Mom would often say, "Don't worry, go to bed, say the rosary, and everything will be better in the morning."

We are especially grateful to Marcia, our mother's caregiver for over three years, who brought so much joy and love to both our parents.

Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, May 12th, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 13th, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 185 Hudson View Dr, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Francesca may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 2649 South Road, Suite 101, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. (www.alz.org)

Soo sorry to her of your moms passing Antonio and family. She was a really down to earth person easy to talk with as i did on some mornings at Frantoni when we live there. Our hearts are with you during this time.
