Joseph Mazzello Obituary

Joseph F. Mazzello, Jr.

Poughkeepsie - Joseph F. Mazzello, Jr, a long time Hyde Park resident, died Sunday, May 13, 2018 after battling a glioblastoma diagnosis since January 2016. He was surrounded by his loving family in Mineola, NY.

He and his wife, Ginnie, opened JG Dance in Hyde Park, NY in 1978. They were high school sweethearts and were married for 41 years. At JG he guided students not just in dance and acting but also in life. Many a student would seek out Joe to discuss their daily hardships. He cared always that they become good people first, as well as good dancers. He would make them laugh and let them know that things would be okay. It always seemed like a party when Joe was around.

Joe was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, the son of Joseph "Muzzie" and Irene Mazzello. Joe grew up on Bridge Street and attended Mt. Carmel Elementary School, Our Lady of Lourdes High School, and Fordham University.where he studied philosophy and law and graduated magna cum laude. He was an alter boy at Mt. Carmel between the ages of 9 - 14. At the age of 15 he appeared in the Broadway Show "Henry, Sweet, Henry" directed by Michael Bennett. He also made several television appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show and directed several one-act plays at Fordham/Lincoln Center. He was the first recipient of the Doctor Bascile college scholarship awarded by The Italian Center. In addition to JG Dance he taught for one year at Holy Trinity School, and in 2010 and 2011 was assistant JV Baseball coach at Our Lady of Lourdes High School. A devoted Catholic, he attended Mass often and was a steady customer at Starbucks where he would strike up a conversation with everyone. He was everybody's friend.

Joe was a devoted father. He spent a lot of time driving his daughter to NYC for television commercials when she was a child, and later, encouraging her in the career she ultimately chose, becoming a lawyer. For his oldest son, an actor, he would travel the world with him as he made movies, and drove with him across the country a dozen times for fun, enjoying their shared love of the American west. And for his youngest son, he devoted years of his life mastering all aspects of the game of baseball, to help make him the dominant player he was. Always a comedian, his kids loved being with him.

Joe is survived by his wife, Ginnie, a daughter, Mary Mazzello, and husband, Ed Lintz, of Brooklyn; a son, Joseph Mazzello of Los Angeles, Ca; and a son, John Mazzello and wife Diana of East Meadow, NY. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Matthew Mazzello, Laura LIntz, and Leah Mazzello; two sisters: Irene Mazzello, and Rosemary Mazzello and husband, Andreas Spirig; and a nephew Christian Willis and a niece, Alexandra Willis.

Calling hours will take place Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 9pm. Calling hours will also take place Friday, May 18, 2018 from 4pm to 8pm at the Timothy P. In loving memory of Joseph F. Mazzello Jr. A phenomenal human in whom left this world too soon. Though I have never gotten a chance to meet him, I find myself talking to him often. Your light shines brightly through your children and through those you've taught at JG Dance. Forever an angel, rest easy now Mr. Mazzello.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Joey and I were dance partners back in 1961 on the Ed Sullivan TV show with the Estelle and Alfonso dancers. Ginnie you were also in that group. I heard of Joeys passing from a Facebook post of your son being in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. He has become a fine actor. My sincere sympathies to you and all your family. From Susan Eisele Beebe.

The Seraphim clearly indicates their ceaseless and eternal revolution about Divine Principles, their heat and keenness, the exuberance of their intense, perpetual, tireless activity, and their elevative and energetic assimilation of those below, kindling them and firing them to their own heat, and wholly purifying them by a burning and all-consuming flame; and by the unhidden, unquenchable, changeless, radiant and enlightening power, dispelling and destroying the shadows of darkness. Placing Seraphim in the highest rank in the Christian angelic hierarchy.

As a member of JG Dance in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I am very saddened to hear of Joe's passing. As a child, I loved going to acro and I loved the care and dedication shown by both Joe and Ginnie. Their business felt like a family, and I am grateful for having learned from them.

I believe to have been being received as " Seraphim " ..........the Seraphim are said to be the highest rank of angel. This is probably because of their very close proximity to God....,,,...So Very Much More Than "Well ", Joe........Thank You ....

My heart is so heavy with this news and my thoughts and prayers are with you, Ginnie, and your children during this difficult time. Dancing at JG has always held a special place in my heart, and I'll always remember it so fondly.

Joe had such a special combination of warmth, humor and talent. He inspired his students to embrace the beauty of movement, but moreover, he inspired us to see the beauty and the humor in every day moments, and that's what made him so very special to all of us who had the privilege to know him. May he Rest In Peace.

Dear Ginnie and Family,
Words can not express the loss of a loved one, especially one that was so beloved by obviously everyone that met him. I read all the memories and tributes of Joe, and I hope that these words will bring you all some comfort just knowing how special he was to everyone. You will be in our daily thoughts and prayers, always. With much love, The Durkin Family

What a teacher, what a father figure, what a guy. Joe was such a positive force in my life growing up and I feel lucky to have known him. My toes are tapping for him.

I am at a loss for words learning about Joey's passing.

We grew up together on Bridge Street, spent a lot of time together getting chased out of the store to go out an play.

He was one of the good guys and was considered to be a brother. In fact his dad, Muzzie was my God Father.

Know he made a big mark on the world. It is now a little bit dimmer knowing he is gone but only in body. My memories of our times growing up will always bring a smile to my face.
