Richard Rumsey Obituary

Richard H.

Rumsey

Clearwater, FL - Richard H. Rumsey, 70, of Clearwater, FL, died suddenly at his home on November 30, 2016. Born on November 7, 1946 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Harry F. Rumsey and Marie G. (Hoyt) Rumsey. A graduate of Rhinebeck High School, Class of 1965, Rich lived in Rhinebeck, NY, for over fifty years before retiring to Florida last year.

A Vietnam veteran, Rich proudly served his country from 1966 to 1969 with the U.S. Army 2nd Airboat Platoon. On January 18, 1968, Rich's airboat was ambushed during a mission. Despite being wounded three separate times, he continued to return fire and drove his airboat back to safety saving the lives of the other wounded soldiers on the airboat. For his heroism and injuries that day, Rich was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

After returning home, Rich worked in the construction industry for many years. He ultimately started his own business, Rumsey General Contracting, building many single family homes in northern Dutchess County. Throughout his life, Rich enjoyed the company of his many friends and was beloved by his family.

He leaves behind his son Kevin Rumsey, wife Colleen, and their children Caroline and Bobby of East Greenbush, NY; his daughter Karen Cable, husband Brian, and their children Olivia and Caitlyn of Kingston, NY; his sister Carol Armstrong and husband David of Kingston, NY and nephews Jason Armstrong and Tanner Armstrong and their families. He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth Rumsey.

Information regarding a celebration of Rich's life will be shared with family and friends soon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rich's memory to the American Legion.

December 4, 2016

This is Dave Feroe an old friend of Rich, I am sorry to hear of his passing. Rich was a good man kind soft spoken and a gentleman it was a pleasure to be around him. Back in the early 80's Rich shared one of his Purple Hearts with John Stein a Viet Nam vet who lost his legs in a friendly fire incident. We had a simple ceremony where Rich handed John his Purple Heart if only on the level we had to make such a judgment. God rest your soul Rich, your Brother Dave

My heart is broken. I have cried many tears but in between those tears have been some smiles because Rums just had that effect on people. He could always make you laugh. I just want to thank you Rich, for your service to our country, for being my Sonny, for all of the silly jokes and stories you told over the years. Thank you for making my life that much better and thank you for being my friend. I love you Rums, until we meet again...
With everlasting love and gratitude, Candee
