Sandra Owen Obituary

Sandra L. Owen

Murrells Inlet - Sandra L. Owen, 73, of Murrells Inlet, SC (formerly of Kingston, NY), died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 26th, 2021, one day after celebrating her 34th wedding anniversary. A loving wife, mother, grandmother & sister, dear friend and life-long learner and mentor, she brought love, compassion, and happiness to many lives.

Sandra leaves behind husband Stephen Fardig, Murrells Inlet, SC; daughter and son-in-law Elinora and Assad Bokhari and granddaughter Esmé Lee, Ferndale, MI; sisters Barbara Novak, Little River, SC and Donna Owen, Riverview, FL; and many extended family members and friends.

Sandra Lee Owen was born on July 10th, 1948 in Poughkeepsie, NY to the late Janet (Wilson) Baker and Herbert Owen. She graduated from Arlington High School (she was on recent reunion committees) and received her Bachelor's degree from SUNY New Paltz. One of her proudest accomplishments was the MSW degree she obtained from Hunter College School of Social Work. Sandy's career in Social Work spanned many decades and included work with people of all ages, from counseling young people through Coordinated Children's Services and Ulster County Mental Health to supporting patients and their families as a Hospice Social Worker.

A gifted musician, Sandy played piano and participated in many singing groups, including Ulster Choral Society, of which she was a founding member, Ars Choralis and the Redeemer Lutheran Church Senior Choir. At Redeemer, she was a member of the Church Council, the Vicar Committee, and was a Stephen Ministry Leader. She was also very invested in politics, volunteering for several Democratic campaigns. She had many hobbies, including reading (she was a book club member for many years), writing, gardening (Sandy could often be found tending her flowers at her home in Kingston) and caring for her many dogs over the years. As a child, she dreamed of traveling the world, and made this dream reality many times over, including recent trips to France, Spain and Sweden. Sandy took a keen interest in family history and, along with her devoted travel companion Steve, traveled the Northeast to locate clues to her ancestry puzzle. Sandy was also an excellent cook and baker, and she will be especially remembered by her family for her incomparable cheesecake, the star dessert at many family gatherings.

All are invited to celebrate Sandra's life at a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 21st at 11am at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 104 Wurts Street, Kingston, NY 12401 (live streaming is available at Youtube.com/redeemerkingston). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church (please note "Music Fund") or Doctors Without Borders.
