Catherine Weingeist Obituary

Catherine McGregor Weingeist, born March 16, 1950, died unexpectedly after a brief illness. A month earlier, she had hip surgery and was discharged a day later. She was able to walk with crutches with minimal pain. In the following weeks she was very weak from dehydration, which was remedied with intravenous fluids, and she made steady progress walking with a cane and returning to her feisty self. On the morning of July 18th, she became unresponsive and neither her husband, Tom, the EMT service nor UIHC physicians were able to resuscitate her.

Cathy was a vibrant member of the community and very dedicated friend to countless people in and outside of Iowa City. She had many close friends and enjoyed talking tirelessly with them or communicating by e-mail. She struck up friendships with foreign students and included them in her family and she was an ardent University of Iowa supporter of all things academic and cultural. She loved children of all ages and actively participated in tutoring elementary school students and working with foreign university students on communication skills. Cathy was educated at the University of Iowa, where she had a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology and a Master's degree in Communication Studies. She was the Executive Director of the Downtown Association for a number of years and she was instrumental in establishing the Friday and Saturday evening concert series.

Cathy was the eldest of six children born in Chicago and is survived by three sisters, Ellen Hurley of Muskegon, Michigan, Meg McGregor and Beth Powers of Chicago, and a brother, John of Cincinnati. She was preceded in death by her parents and eldest brother, Bill. She and her husband would have celebrated 38 years of marriage in August. Cathy and Tom have two sons. Rob McGregor Weingeist, MS, has an Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine practice in Iowa City, and David McGregor Weingeist, PhD, is a medical technology consultant in San Francisco. Aaron Perera Weingeist, MD who lives in Seattle and Rachel Perera Weingeist, MS, who is an art consultant in New York City, are Tom's children from a prior marriage.

A memorial gathering in Cathy's honor is planned for Saturday July 23rd from 2 to 5 PM at The Harvest Preserve, 1645 North Scott Blvd, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to The Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation (123 S. Linn St., Iowa City, Iowa) or United Action for Youth (1700 S. 1st Avenue #14, Iowa City, Iowa).

Friend indeed and great loss to our civic culture here in Iowa.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.
