Norma Magdalene Martens Brozaitis
of Vestal, N.Y.
Norma Brozaitis of Vestal, N.Y., passed away at the age of 88 on May 25, 2008. She spent her last few years at the Ideal Senior Living Facility with dementia. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dean in February 2003 and all his siblings, Robert (Jack) Brozaitis, Binghamton, Richard Nichols, Endicott, and Marge Seaver, Endicott; and her younger sister, Grace Fancher, Cary, N.C.; and twin brothers, Karl and Andrew Martens, Vestal and Endicott respectively. She is survived by her son and family, Richard and Fran Brozaitis, Napa, Calif.; and daughter and family, Nancy and Ray Avery, Vestal; grandsons, Chris Avery, Covington, Ky., Tim Avery, Annapolis, Md., Brad and Carey Brozaitis, Rancho Murieta, Calif.; great-granddaughters, Rhianna and Kaelyn Avery, and Kaylin and Jenna Brozaitis; also survived by two sisters-in-law, Jackie Martens, Vestal and Evelyn Brozaitis, Binghamton; and several nieces and nephews. There are still cousins and distant family in Denmark. Norma was born in Veijle, Denmark on May 16, 1920 and immigrated with her parents in 1921. She was raised and lived in Endicott until the 50's then moved to Vestal. She graduated from U-E High School and was later involved with assisting on the class reunions. She was a member of the Holy Nativity Lutheran Church of Endicott. Norma's work life was varied, including cafeteria worker in the Vestal School System, keypunching for Singer Link of Binghamton, and GE of Johnson City from which she retired. She was a good and generous friend to many, always there to lend a helping hand. Norma was also known for her baking and created a lot of special occasion cakes, including doll and wedding cakes. After retirement she was on the Town of Vestal election committee and a volunteer worker for Meals on Wheels, Lourdes short-stay, and Waterman activities, and a few years after retirement had made local Volunteer of the Year.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. from the Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home, Inc., 300 East Main St., Endicott. The Rev. Michele Fischer, Pastor of her church, will officiate. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday from 12 Noon until service time at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Alzheimer's Association-Southern Tier, 401 Hayes Ave., Endicott, N.Y. 13760.

Mrs. Brozaitis ... as I always called her even into my adult life ... will always remain in my heart. She was my inspiration for baking and sewing! There just wasn't anyone who could do it better. I still recall the beautiful wreath of danish baked goods she would deliver to our home at Christmas. And of course the light blue jr. bridesmaid dress she made for me for Nancy and Ray's wedding. The other dresses were store bought but she copied them exactly and created mine. It was beautiful. And then she made my own wedding cake, with fountains holding up the layers! However, the greatest inspiration to me was Mrs. Brozaitis' energy and spirit. She travelled to California on several occasions even when travelling was no longer easy but did it because family meant the world to her. I love you, Mrs. Brozaitis .... and when I meet you in heaven some day, I hope I can finally call you "Norma". But until then ... I'll continue to think of you and remember the many special occasions we shared. Your grandsons (my nephews) were always tops in both our books! And we loved bragging to each other about them. My deepest sympathies go to all of you ... I share in your loss. xxxoooxxxx

Nancy,
I was saddened to learn of your loss. My mom, also 88, is in very poor health at a nursing home here in Rochester. Dad passed away from dementia years ago, and you probably know that we lost Linda last May 30. In addition, I lost my husband to lung cancer nearly five and a half years ago. In spite of everything, life is good and trust that it is good for you as well.

Hope that you are well and am sure you appreciate the blessings of your mother's life.

Fondly,
Bonnie (Bartholomew) Shirley
