Daniel SHAY Obituary

SHAY, Daniel W. On Sunday, March 25, Dan died peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends after struggling with leukemia. He is survived by his brother Brian, sister Constance, former wife Rosalie, children; Jordan, Aaron, Daniel, Jessica and Julian, and granddaughters; Savanah and Sophia. He was born in Pontiac, MI on September 14, 1938 and moved to CA in 1969. He was a journeyman roofer most of his working life as well as an active member in his community and in many local and national groups that help the homeless, stand against war, support Native Americans and promote interfaith dialogue. He discovered the Catholic Worker Movement in 1960 and was strongly influenced thereafter toward voluntary poverty, personalism and pacifism. He gives thanks to the courageous souls along the way who offered support and witness to the things above. He considered himself fortunate to have so many diverse friends and is grateful to everyone who picked him up when he fell down. A funeral mass will be held at St. Rose Catholic Church, 398 10th Street, Santa Rosa on Friday, April 13 at 5pm with a reception following at the St. Rose Parish Hall. Contributions can be made to Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa, www.srcharities.org.

A few years after Dan and Rosalie moved to Sonoma County I became a live in nanny for their family. They were the best employers/family. I always enjoyed the time I would bump into Dan over the years. His passion for social justice was inspirational. Much love to his family for their loss.

Dan, you've done so much for Santa Rosa more than anyone I know. You've been a big part of this community. Every time I see you at St. Rose Church, you make me smile. You are a true ambassador of friendliness, open heartedness, and how it is to be generous. We'll miss you.

Dan, even though we haven't seen each other much since the '60's at the University of Detroit, I will never forget you and the good times we had together there and in High School. You were always looking out for the less fortunate whether it was it was because of their status in life or due to racial inequality. I know God will take are of you for all that you have done for others. Rest in Peace MY FRIEND FOREVER.
