Nanci Mathison Obituary

Nanci Mathison
January 7, 1953 - May 28, 2022
We are heart broken to share that we lost another light on May 28th, 2022. Nanci Mathison peacefully departed this world for the world above after courageously battling cancer for three years.
Nanci was born in the midwest in Cleveland, Ohio, but she found her home in Sonoma, California after attending Brown University. When she first moved to Sonoma in 1976 the town was much different from the place it has become today, there was a lot less "traffic" in her words.
She loved helping others and found her calling in the education system spending her lifetime working for the Sonoma School district touching countless lives.
Nanci enjoyed helping kids and worked as a Special Education teacher at Sonoma Valley High for years before eventually becoming the vice principal, making high school an extra fun experience for her two boys while they were attending. Nanci then obtained her masters in Organizational Management to become a District Director for Sonoma Valley School District.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years Robert, and her two sons Scott and Kaare. Also extremely important to her were her nieces and nephews, Sarah, Becky, Luke, and Mark.
Nanci improved the lives of so many and never asked for anything in return. She will be dearly missed.

It's hard to believe a year has gone by. I remember when she and Robert 1st got together, the wedding. I think I went to every house they lived in and there were many! She seemed to love her husband, children, and her life. Her death leaves a hole in the many people's lives she touched. Rosemary McCarthy

I´m honestly deeply shocked and saddened by this news. The last time I saw Nanci was at a retirement party for me. She was always so kind and supportive. So many of us "oldies" in the special education department in Sonoma Valley Unified reflect on how many people there are now doing the job Nanci did quietly, professionally and compassionately all by herself. She was an amazing woman, and one I very much valued and loved. What an example to so many! I will greatly miss her sparkling smile, but I believe her shining spirit lives on. Sending much love to Robert, and their boys.

Nanci was, and is, truly a light that touched so many people. Her love of kids, her gentle and calm demeanor, her honesty and integrity, and her intelligence and knowledge were an inspiration to all who had the fortune to know and work with her. In her work Nanci was always guided first and foremost by what was best for her students. She was a source of guidance and direction for so many throughout her work in education. Nanci was a dedicated educator and a wonderful human being. She will be missed.

We are so deeply sorry to hear of Nanci's passing. I remember her first as the pretty young teacher with the handsome young teacher at Sonoma High, then as the mother of beautiful young Kaare, then as a wonderful VP at Sonoma High. She was kind and caring and had a nice dry wit. Sending our prayers and love to the family.
