Barbara J. Virden

Barbara J. Virden, 88, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Pleasantville, NJ, by the late Paul D. and Johanna (Blom) Gorman. In later years, she raised her family in Absecon, NJ.

In her younger years, Barb worked as an Aide with the Salvation Army. Later her career took her to Resorts International in Atlantic City, NJ, where she was Director of Benefits. She later became the Municipal City Clerk for Absecon, NJ.

Barbara, a woman of faith, was an active member of her church in Absecon. Once in Lancaster, she joined the Lampeter United Methodist Church and remained active throughout her time there.

Every generation has someone who is the gatherer, planner, and coordinator, and that was Barbara. Her home was the place for most family holidays and impromptu gatherings. You never knew who was going to come through the door, and all were welcome.

Family was Barbara's greatest love. She was involved in her children's activities, especially with 4-H. Many considered her to be the glue that held the extended family together.

Barbara is survived by her children: Donna Virden of Philadelphia, Sue Ellen Harris (Mark) of Lancaster, Jim Virden, Jr. (Denise) of Haddonfield, NJ, Scott Virden (Lisa) of Cardiff, MD; sisters, Johanna "Jody" Kensky, Paula Crawford (Thomas), and Patricia "Trish" Mangiafico (Joseph); sister-in-law, Barbara "Bobbie" Gorman; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul "Butch" Gorman, Jr.; brother-in-law, Ed Kensky; and former husband, James Virden, Sr.

Family and friends can pay their respects at The Groff's Family Funeral Home, 528 W. Orange Street, Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Visitation starts at 12 p.m. with a service at 1 p.m.
