BERNICE GOLDBERG Obituary

GOLDBERG, BERNICE (NEE GOLDBLUM) 86 - of Ventnor, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at her home after a long illness. Born in Philadelphia to Jacob Goldblum and Anita (Gitelas) Goldblum, she was the younger sister of the late Samuel G. Goldblum, CPA of Philadelphia. Bernice attended the Barney elementary school and graduated Olney High School in 1943, as a member of the National Honor Society and with a scholarship to Chestnut Hill College. She attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Gratz College, where she successfully trained in Jewish religious teaching. Bernice met her late husband, Dr. Jack E. Goldberg, on the beach in Atlantic City, and as he went off to WWII as a 1st Lt. in the Army Air Corps, kept in close contact as his unit moved from North Africa to Europe. On his return, they married on August 25, 1946 and settled in Atlantic City. Their son Bob (Robert M. Goldberg, MD) arrived in November 1947, and by 1951, the young family relocated to her 60 year residence in Ventnor. Their daughter, Judy (Judith C. Goldberg-Berman, MD, PhD) was born in January, 1957. Bernice worked with her late husband, Dr. Jack, in his optometry practice for over four decades. She also enjoyed her work as a Hebrew school teacher in the Beth Judah (Ventnor) religious school. She was an active member of Beth Judah for years and enjoyed participating in services, study groups, singing with the choir at special events and being a member of the first adult Bat Mitzvah class. Bernice served as Den Mother of the Cub Scouts, Pack 27, Ventnor. She was a President of the Ventnor PTA and achieved 100% participation. Bernice became involved with the Jewish War Veterans through Jack and continued to be involved in their activities for many years. She served the Ventnor Library in evaluating new books for acquisition, a well-suited job as she was a voracious reader. She participated in a variety of community service projects, particularly those that involved local senior citizens. As her children left for their higher educations, she and Jack enjoyed traveling. They visited many destinations in Europe, explored Israel, and retraced Jack's World War II postings in North Africa and Europe. They looked forward to visiting California for a few months each winter at which time they reconnected with family there. Jack and Bernice traveled to continuing education seminars at colleges in the US, and on dance trips with their friends. Theatre and concerts drew them to many local performances and frequent trips to Philadelphia and New York. After Jack's death in 1992, Bernice appreciated spending time with her close friends, and formed new friendships for companionship and traveling. She is survived by her son, Robert M. Goldberg, MD, of Somers Point, and his daughters, Jessica Goldberg, MBA of Manhattan and Jacqueline Goldberg, MD of Philadelphia; and her daughter, Judith C. Goldberg-Berman, MD, PhD (Michael Berman) and their daughters, Allison, Julia and Rachel of Mamaranack, NY. Her dedication to her family, constant faith and optimistic outlook will always be remembered. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services today, April 6th, at 1pm, at Cong. Beth Judah, 700 N. Swarthmore Ave., Ventnor, interment to follow at Beth Kehillah Cemetery in Egg Harbor Twp. Shiva details will be announced at the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernice's memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Arr. ROTH-GOLDSTEINS' MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Atlantic City www.rothgoldsteins.com

To Bobby Goldberg & Families: Dear Bobby, I wanted to express my sadness of the passing of your Mother, Bernice. I know that as we get older, we become much closer to our parents & become friends more than sons & daughters. I hope you had this kind of relationship with your Mother. I have known you since we were children & believe that alot of your success & happiniess was rooted by the wonderful parents that raised you. I wish you much comfort in the memories you have.
