Peter Cummins Obituary

Peter Cummins, known affectionately as Pop, passed away after a courageous battle with Melanoma in Nashville, TN, surrounded by his loving family on August 18, 2023, at the age of 68.

Peter was born in Perth Amboy, NJ on June 27, 1955, to the late Joseph and Jean Cummins. He lived in New Jersey most of his life before relocating to Nashville to be closer to his daughter and youngest grandchildren. He retired from the Atlantic City School System where he was a special education teacher and parent advocate for 41 years. It was his passion to help his students reach their full potential. His work with them extended beyond education, often spending much of his personal time advocating for them and their families.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He filled his home with warmth, strong values, and unconditional love. His greatest joy was time spent with family and he created wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. He enjoyed traveling, spending time outside and reading a good book. He was a friend to many. Everywhere he went, he knew someone to engage in conversation with. He was a selfless, nurturing, kind, and compassionate man of deep faith who saw the good in everyone. His sense of humor and sarcasm was appreciated by many and can be seen in his children and grandchildren. He will be profoundly missed by so many and stay forever in our hearts.

He is survived by his wife Catherine Cummins (née Hickman); his children, Caitlyn (Shane) Brinkley, Jason (Brenda) Rzemyk, and Gary (Nicole) Rzemyk; his grandchildren, Evelyn Brinkley, Silas Brinkley, Jaxson Rzemyk, Rachel Rzemyk, Olivia Rzemyk, Sarah Kawejsza-Rzemyk, and Tyler Rzemyk; his sisters Mary Cummins, Jean Valencia (née Cummins), Patricia (Ramon) Martinez, Maureen (Brian) Ryan; brothers, Joe (Marianne) Cummins, Bill (Betsy) Cummins, Tim (Mary) Cummins, John (Laura) Cummins, and Tom (Kerrie) Cummins and dozens of nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Ellen (Carl) Santaniello.

Visitation is scheduled for 11:00AM on October 14th with funeral mass to follow at 12:00PM at the Church of St. Katharine Drexel, 6075 West Jersey Avenue, Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5061 Harding Hwy, Mays Landing, NJ 08330. Celebration of Life to follow.

My deepest condolences and sympathy to the entire Cummins family in the enormous loss of their loving husband, father & grandfather; Pete was a champion for his students & an ardent advocate for their families.

Pete was one astonishing educator, because he kept things simple and consistent for his students; he gave them purpose to succeed as he advocated for children and their families for so many years at Richmond Avenue School (where I first learned and worked together with him) and then at the new AC High School!
What he shared with so many families was a steadfast love for teaching their children and guiding them even after they graduated his amazing class.
He was truly a pioneer in the Special Education department and a true friend to all that he ever encountered, worked with him and even all the hours he gave with after school programs showed his unselfishness and compassion.

He is truly one person that taught so many the Art of Patience!
God bless friend and may the Lord embrace your family, as you have embraced Living!

Wow,
there are so many good things to be said about this man.
Simply put: Pete Cummins was an all around great guy!
I worked with him @ ACHS room c104. Not for long but He helped me out alot.
He did so much with and for the students, as well as their parents.
I use to tell him that he cannot retire because there will never be another like him. Advocating was his passion. He loved what he did and he did it so well!
Thanks Pete for all that you did, you will never be forgotten!
My Deepest condolences to the family. God Bless
Kathy
