Richard Simon Obituary

RICHARD A. SIMON

Richard A. Simon, best known to his family, friends, and colleagues as Dick, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022, in his home in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, surrounded by family. He was 85.

Dick was born on April 24, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, to his father, H. Harvey Simon, and his mother, Rose Cohen Simon. He attended Bates College before going to medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine. He was a radiology resident at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, and he worked at the New England Medical Center in Massachusetts. At Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Massachusetts, he met a young R.N., Anne-Marie Power, and fell in love.

The two spent time in San Francisco-Dick working as an intern, and Anne-Marie as a nurse-before returning to the East Coast. Dick and Anne-Marie married in 1963, and had their first two children, Jeff and Erik, in New York. Dick dreamed of going west again, to Southern California, so they moved to Santa Monica and then Fullerton, where their daughter, Dawn, was born. The family moved to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1971. Dick had a private radiology practice in Torrance, California, that Anne-Marie helped run once the kids were raised. In 1994, Dick and Anne-Marie-heading even farther west-left Southern California for Maui. Dick continued practicing medicine, and Anne-Marie became a real estate agent. When Dick retired from medicine, he followed Anne-Marie into real estate. Soon their oldest son, Jeff, joined the family business, Simon Properties.

When friends and family talk about Dick, one of the first things often mentioned is the amazing sense of humor he shared with everyone. Sometimes, at open houses, he'd nap on a couch and put a sign on his chest that said, "I'm probably not dead. Wake me with an offer." He said his social security number was one. He was mischievous. Brilliant, too-all the way up until the very end. He also had one of the kindest hearts and would give anything for his family. Forever in love with Anne-Marie, he wore her wedding band on a necklace after she passed away, and he told everyone she was the best thing to ever happen to him.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and then, in 2013, by his beloved wife, Anne-Marie. He is survived by his children Jeffrey Scott Simon, Erik Brett Simon, and Dawn-Michelle VanderMeer; his grandchildren Nicole VanderMeer Hashmeh, William Francis Simon, Katyln Amber Simon, Kevin James VanderMeer, Macy Makena Simon, and Kathryn Anne Simon; and his brother, James Stephan Simon.

A memorial service to celebrate Dick's life will be held in Maui. To honor Dick's life, donations may be made to any nonprofit that focuses on children, such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House.

I don´t exactly know what to say. I am so very sorry for your loss. Dick and I talked very frequently often times about AnneMarie and about my Paul. We laughed and we sometimes cried. I miss those conversations but now I know he is with his AnneMarie. Your Dad was a wonderful and caring person. I miss him also.
