Rev. John Richard Burns, 76, Moline, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Unity Point Rock Island, with his family at his side. Funeral services are 11 AM Friday, June 17, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Moline. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7 PM Thursday at St. Mary's Church, 412 10th Street, Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Alleman High School or the Monsignor George A. Carton College Seminarian Scholarship Fund.
John Burns was born on August 21, 1945 in Moline, the son of Harold B. and Irene C. (DeJaeger) Burns. He graduated from Alleman High School, class of 1963, associate from Black Hawk College and received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Finance from St. Ambrose University in Davenport. He received his Master's in Divinity from Holy Apostle Seminary in Cromwell CT. Fr. John was Ordained May 26, 1990, served as Parochial Vicar – Holy Cross, Champaign (1990) Pastor – St. John, Walnut and Immaculate Conception, Ohio (1993) St. Francis, Kewanee and St. John, Cambridge (1996) St. Mary, East Moline (2003) St. John the Apostle, Woodhull and St. John Vianney, Galva (2005), Pastor St. John, Galva, St. John, Woodhull and St. John Vianney, Cambridge (2005). Fr. John was an avid runner who ran in the Bix 7 for 44 years.
Survivors include siblings; Ruth Kelley, Rock Island, Teresa (John) Huyten, Moline and Cindy (John) Jaster, Moline, sister-in-law Sharon Burns, Rock Island and numerous; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Rosemarie Kennedy, Robert Burns, Joseph Burns, and Patricia Jennings.
