Dr. Rhauda was born in 1943 in Berlin, Germany, a son of the late Hermann and Irene (Witt) Rhauda. Armin and his parents immigrated to the U.S. in 1954, when his father took a job with an American company. They settled in Queens, N.Y.
Dr. Rhauda graduated from Temple University in 1981. He completed medical school in 1988, graduating from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara Facultad de Medicina in Guadalara, Mexico. He served on the staff of the Coatesville VA Hospital, The Reading Hospital & Medical Center and Lancaster General Hospital. He was currently a partner with Pulmonary Associates of Lancaster, last working in July of 2010.
Dr. Rhauda had many and varied interests, including racing Alfa Romeos, collecting books and German toys, all things related to his beloved Spring Mt. Farm and Robeson Township, and collecting tractors.
He was fluent in German, French and Spanish. Armin especially enjoyed traveling and listening to the classical music of the Reading Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

I can´t believe it´s been thirteen years! I still think of Armin , always tinkering and pondering. A true friend and brilliant colleague who never ceased to amaze me with not only his medical acumen but with many other things in general. We spent many hours each day in medical school, innumerable conversations about medical topics and about life in general. The best housemate anyone could ask for! I still hear his voice and I still miss him so much.

It's a strange thing but I still can't believe Armin is gone. He was so very vivid in life; he added such value to the life of everyone he came in contact with, it's as if he were there on the farm in Pennsylvania, still involved in projects, enjoying his collections, engaged in the community, aware of what is going on in the world, thinking a myriad of thoughts, so full of life and love, particularly of his beloved Patty. I will never forget the first time I met Armin, twenty years ago. He came to Los Angeles for a five-day pulmonology seminar and stayed with Patty's father and me. We sat around the dining-room table getting acquainted, and within minutes we all were laughing, full of delight with this wonderful person. Hearing that infectious giggle of Armin's I burst out with, "He's a male Patty!" It's been a wonderful 20 years. My life is richer for these precious memories.

I first met Armin at Annie's house in Serene Lakes several years ago. We went for a hike to a lake in the high Sierras. We were enjoying ourselves hugely, when suddenly I fell and gashed my shin on a rock. Armin was the perfect physician; he prevented me from swimming in the lake because, as he put it, "We don't know what's in it." Armin made a powerful impression upon me. He was a truly good man, with a wonderful sense of humor. We will miss him.

Armin was my oldest friend. We were together at school in Berlin from 1953 to 1954 when the family emigrated to the United States. In 1964 I stayed with the Rhaudas in New York and went to Florida with Armin in his Austin Healey frog eye - a unique experience. Although we rarely saw each other afterwards, we never lost contact. The miracle of friendship: when, in 2006, we met in Luxembourg for the first time after more than 40 years, it took not even five minutes to make us feel as if we had always lived door to door. Together with Patty and my wife Renate, we shared memorable days. His spontaneous laugh , his Berlin accent when we spoke German, and, above all, his interest in and true understanding of human nature and conditions will not be forgotten. I am deeply sorry that we had only few occasions to meet. It is so unjust that he had to go. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Patty.

I am deeply grateful and blessed to have known Armin for the time that I did as his colleague. There are many things about life that he taught me. Most of all he taught me, by the example of his life, that the traditions that make up the fabric of our lives should always be in our minds and hearts.

Friend, colleague, roommate. Armin and I met in medical school. We quickly became friends and eventually roommates. He was always able to see the bright side of things and made it easy to get through the tough moments. He was uniquely intelligent, inquisitive and compassionate. Always laughing and smiling. He had such varied interests. He loved to tinker with things and was a perfectionist to say the least. In medical school, he loved driving his VW Bug, tuning it like a fine swiss timepiece. I recall taking many a corner on two wheels in it. Of course, i was always reassured of his driving skills given his history of racing alfa romeo and the bug-eyed-sprite. Armin was passionate about many things, but most passionate of his wife Patty. I know she was the crown jewel of his life. His life touched so many people, all of which are uniquely privileged to have known him. I was fortunate enough to spend a slice of life with him. I deeply miss him. I know GOD has him busy tinkering and perfecting something as we speak. How fortunate we all are to have known such a man.

Armin was a great friend. We met as medical students in Guadalajara. He was a groomsman in my wedding. And I in his. His mind was incredible. A powerful brain that remembered everything. He loved medicine, things mechanical and Patty, his wife. He talked of her as if he had won the lottery and on that day his numbers all came in.

Armin was such a fun person, always had a laugh and a funny story. I knew Armin as a friend to share stories with, exchange car tales, Halloween parties, dinners, Wizard of Oz fondue dinners, and share friends. Truly the world was a better place because Armin was there. I will miss his laugh. Patty, my prayers and condolences are with you.

Dr. Rhauda was an inspiration to me as an ICU nurse. He taught me so much. He lived with his wife Dr. Patty Rhauda near me in Robeson Township. My husband hunted on his land and we took our children fishing in their pond. He was so kind to our whole family. We will miss him! Patty, our condolences and prayers are with you.....

What an honor getting to work with Dr. Rhauda! Never a dull moment with his humor. Never hesitating to listen to the nursing staff, answering questions, and the dedication he showed, helping to deal with a sick patient. He was honest and straight forward with families and patients in critical situations- which the staff appreciated. I also want to say that he was my husband's physician and was proactive in getting him on the right track with his issues. I got to see Dr. Rhauda from both sides; professional and as a patient's family member, and always had total respect for him. My heart sank and the tears rolled when I heard of his death. My comfort is knowing his pain is no more and he is cancer free! Dr. Rhauda, I will miss your big smile!! My prayers to his wife and family during this difficult time.

Oh my goodness. I just learned of Dr. Rhauda's passing. I was a Nurse Practitioner with The Heart Group for a few years and worked night shift. We worked on many cases together and I respected his knowledge and all the work we did together on some very difficult cases. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

The Doc at one of my last visits. A really good man who impressed me more than any and the reason I am alive today...
