Born in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Warren and Emma (Hoffman) Merkel.
He was the owner of Merkel's Shoe Barn, Gilbertsville, since 1956. When he started his business from the back of his pickup truck he also worked at Flagg's as a machinist. Howard worked long and hard hours all his life to provide for his family.
Howard served as a master sergeant in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in Germany he was the head of the motor pool.
He was a longtime attendee and faithful supporter of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Boyertown. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sassamansville, where he served as Sunday school teacher superintendent.
He enjoyed riding his bike around the shoe store and the neighborhood. Howard was a great family provider and a very giving and generous person. He donated shoes to Indonesia, Africa and worldwide. He also donated a 27-foot trailer full of shoes to aid families after Hurricane Katrina. Often unknown to others, he supported people in quiet and various ways.
Surviving is his wife Jeannette of 55 years (married August 3, 1958); a daughter, Deborah M. Merkel of Frederick; a son, Michael A., husband of Sherri L. Merkel, of Earl Township; grandchildren Lauren N., wife of Shawn M. Reinhart, of Oley; Brooke E. and Christopher M. Merkel, both of Earl Township; two sisters, Anna Ziemer and Shirley Klee, both of Boyertown and a brother, David Merkel of Altoona. Howard was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Jason Merkel, and seven brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 250 Sweinhart Road, Boyertown. Reverend Don McHenry will officiate. Relatives and friends will be received on Tuesday between 9:30 - 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Limerick Garden of Memories.
