Born and raised in Reading, he was a son of the late Vincenzo and Sarafina (Scalise) Quartieri.
He was a 1946 graduate of Reading Catholic High School, before serving in the U.S. Army in Germany and Switzerland.
Jim was an insurance salesman for Metlife for 11 years. He then opened Quartieri's Meat Market in Temple, which he and Mary owned and operated for 28 years, before retiring in 1990. Jim was a devoted member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, attending services here or at other parishes daily while his health allowed.
Jim will be remembered by family and friends as a man who always thought of others first. From taking care of his customers at the store, to hosting the extended family every year on Christmas night to tireless care of his older siblings and other family members, Jim never ceased to give his time and energy for the needs of those around him.
Jim was an avid sports fan who followed his Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Eagles, but his favorite sport was tennis, which he played regularly until age 84. Jim's other hobby was following his stocks. His investments may not have been large, but it gave him great enjoyment to keep track of them daily.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his son, James, Sacramento, CA; daughter, Kathleen Q., wife of Robert H. Swope, with whom he resided; two grandchildren: John Quartieri, South San Fransisco, CA, and Adam H. Swope, Malvern PA. He was predeceased by five siblings: Augustine, Dominic, Patsy, Peter and Mary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 237 Franklin St., in Reading. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery in Muhlenberg Township. Friends may call Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 4 Park Plaza Suite 105A, Park Road North, Wyomissing, PA 19610.

Dear Mary and Family,
Jimmy was such a kind, gentle man. Since childhood, I enjoyed visiting with your family, because all of you made us feel welcomed. What I remember most about Jimmy is his contagious smile and soft spoken voice. John and I will always remember our recent visit with your family, and we thank Kathy for making that beautiful memory possible for us. Jimmy will truly be missed by many family members and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Kathy, Jimmy and their families.
