Michael Haus

Michael J. Haus, 69, of Leesport and The Villages, Lady Lake, Florida, passed away at home Aug. 9, 2012, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Mike was the husband of Barbara F. (Foster) Haus and the son of the late Joseph and Anna B. (Beyer) Haus.

Mike was born in Youngstown, Ohio, Oct. 20, 1942, and spent his early years in Ridgewood, Queens, and Gilboa, New York, where he attended St. Bridget School and Gilboa Central. His family eventually settled in Lexington, Kentucky.

After graduating from Lexington Catholic High School in 1960, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he became a Hospital Corpsman and medical laboratory technologist. His Navy career included tours of duty at Pawtuxet River Naval Air Station where he completed Marine Fleet support training and Bethesda Naval hospital.

In 1964 he was assigned to the USS America (CN-66) traveling to Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis followed by two deployments to the Mediterranean. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1967.

He and his family returned to Lexington, KY, where he completed a B.A. degree at the University of Kentucky.

Mike pursued a career in medical laboratory administration and later sales of medical laboratory equipment supplies. He continued this career path after moving to Leesport, PA, in 1977.

He was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Society of Medical Technologists.

He won numerous awards throughout his career, including but not limited to "Outstanding Sales Performance 84 - 85," "Over-achievement Award" and "Top GP Performance."

In 1982, Mike re-enlisted in the Naval Reserve for an appointment with the Medical Service Corps for an additional three years.

Mike was an assistant leader in the Cub Scouts of America, a member of the Knights of Columbus and faithful member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Reading, PA.

Called a "Renaissance man" by one of his dear friends, Mike's interests were many. He was an enthusiast of gourmet cooking and fine wines as well as an avid golfer, gardener, hunter, fisherman and banjo-picker.

He was a fan of a variety of music, especially Broadway show tunes, country and bluegrass music. He took great pleasure in photography and spent many hours capturing images of nature, which he would later matte and frame. Mike enjoyed traveling throughout the United States as well as cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Europe.

Mike took great pride in being a "Kentucky Colonel." He loved his dogs and enjoyed meticulously maintaining his Berks County Historic home and property.

Upon retirement, Mike and Barbara purchased a home in The Villages, Florida, where he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, entertaining and hosting fabulous gourmet dinner parties. He was a member of Saint Marks Catholic Church, Summerfield, FL.

In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by three children: Jennifer M. Haus (Astoria, New York City, and wife of Kevin Gleeson), Kelly M. Haus (Rancho Cucamonga, California), and Michael J. Haus Jr. (Shippensburg, PA); and loving grandsons: Jacob Hult, Joey Haus, and Michael J. Haus III.

Other surviving relatives include two brothers, Ralph, Leander, TX and George, Kalamazoo, MI, as well as numerous in-laws and family members.

Relatives and friends may extend their sympathy and respects from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the 11 a.m. Memorial Mass, Tuesday, Aug. 14, at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, in Reading. Interment will be private.
