West Reading. He was the loving husband of Paula L. (Geibel) Lovello, whom he married on May 24, 1980. Born in Reading, Sam was the only child of Joseph S. and Jennie F. (Fierro) Lovello.
He was a member of Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Reading, and a 1965 graduate of Reading Senior High School. Sam first attended college at North Carolina State University for two years, where he received his varsity letter in wrestling. He later finished his college education at Kutztown State College, now Kutztown University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in
Elementary Education, and where he also was a member
of the wrestling team.
Mr. Lovello was employed by Brandywine Heights Area School District for 31 years, working as a 5th and 6th grade teacher at District Topton Elementary School, and later at Brandywine Heights Middle School, until his retirement in 2009. Prior to teaching at Brandywine Heights, Sam was employed as an Elementary School Teacher by Reading School District, working at several of their elementary schools, for seven years.
Sam was also heavily involved with the wrestling program at Brandywine Heights. Known by many as Coach Lovello, Sam was the Head Coach of the Brandywine Heights High School Wrestling Team for 39 years, beginning with the 1974-75 season. He then coached at Wilson High School from 1984-86, but returned to his true home, Brandywine Heights, the following year.
During his tenure, Coach Lovello compiled a 533-226-3 record, coached two PIAA Class AA champions and led the Bullets to the PIAA Class AA team title at the 2001 PIAA Wrestling Championships. He was also dedicated to the
entire K-12 wrestling program and The Brandywine Heights Bullet Mat Club.
Coach Lovello served as Treasurer of the Berks County Wrestling Coach's Association for many years and was active in the Berks County Interscholastic Athletic Association. Sam was a wrestling Hall-of-Famer, and was inducted into the Berks County, District 3, Pennsylvania, and National Halls-of-Fame for his excellence and dedication to the sport of wrestling. He also volunteered at the Reading School District Multi-Class Get Together, held each year at Evergreen Country Club, Fleetwood.
Sam took pride in cars, having been a member of
Skyline Drive Corvette Club, Reading, and enjoyed playing poker with his friends, where his competitive nature was immediately apparent.
However, one of Sam's real loves in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. For the past seven years, there was never a day that went by that Sam didn't talk to or see his two grandkids. His dedication to his family and being able to "bring out the best" in his students and wrestling team as well as being a great mentor to so many, will always be remembered and never forgotten.
Survivors: Sam is survived by his loving and devoted
wife of 36 years, Paula; and was the loving father of Joey J. Lovello, at home, and Kristi M. (Lovello), wife of Jonathan F. Shuman, Fleetwood; and proud Grandpa of Tyden R. Shuman, Teagan R. Shuman, and was excited about the
upcoming birth of his third grandchild in October.
He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lorraine A. (Archambault) Geibel, Ruscombmanor Township; and sister-in-law, Janet M. (Geibel) Leis, Laureldale.
Services: A Celebration of Sam's Life will be held on
Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in Brandywine Heights High School Auditorium, 103 Old Topton Road, Mertztown. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.
The family encourages relatives and friends to write down and comprise their fondest memories of Sam, and bring them along to the visitation as a keepsake for the family. There will not be any calling hours on Saturday morning, however doors will open at 8:00 a.m.
Contributions: The family requests contributions be made in Sam's memory to the Samuel J. Lovello Memorial Fund, c/o Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., P.O. Box 292, Kutztown, PA 19530-0292, to be distributed to local
community organizations in the future.
Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., Kutztown, is in charge of Mr. Lovello's arrangements. Online condolences may be

A great Man Sam Will Be Missed

September 16, 2016
My thoughts and prayers are with Paula, Kristi, and Joey as they bear the grief of losing a true legend of a man. From the time Coach recruited me to wrestle in the 7th grade until our last interaction playing poker a few weeks ago, his presence always brought joy to my life, as well as all others who were fortunate enough to be in his presence. Sam was one of the most important and influential people I have ever met, and his teachings impact me every day of my life. I will forever miss him, but now know that he and Van will be together to start the best wrestling program in heaven. Rest in Peace Coach. I love you!

Our hearts are breaking for Paula, Joey, Kristi, and their families at this sad time. Sam always had so much energy and certainly had a love for life. I was talking with my daughter-in-law who had Sam for a teacher in 5th grade. She said it was the only class she looked forward to going to because Mr. Lovello was always able to engage all of the students in his lessons. For a teacher, it doesn't get much better than that! Having taught both of his children, he did a pretty good job in the "dad" area, too! Ted and I hugely regret that we cannot make Sam's funeral, but our prayers, thoughts, and love will be with you. God bless

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Coach. He was a great man and great wrestling coach. As a member of his team, he taught us how to be great young men, as well as building a program anyone would be proud of. It was a great honor to know coach, he was such a legend in the sport. My thoughts and prayers are with the Lovello family at this time. Sam will never be forgotten.

To those of us in the wrestling community it is hard to imagine Berks wrestling without Sam. His ambition and dedication was reflected year after year in the teams Brandywine placed on the mat. As a referee I viewed him from a different perspective than many, his expectations on your performance was no less than what he required of himself and his wrestlers. I had the opportunity to referee his 200th, 300th, 400th wins in addition to seven or eight years of those great Brandywine/Oley matches. I've always appreciated Sam's input because it not only came from a knowledgable individual but because I considered Sam a true and genuine friend

I am sorry for your loss. He was one of my favorite teachers at Brandywine. I was a student in one of his first 5th grade classes that he taught at Brandywine. He was an amazing teacher who taught me more than just the usual things you learn in school. He always had time for any of his students. He will be missed!!

Coach Sam Lovello will be remembered by me as one of the most respected and one of the most competive wrestling coaches in District 3. He gave his heart and sole to the sport of wrestling. You could tell he was there for the kids. He was always a lot of fun to be around, even when you were competing against him, because you knew he was going to give you his best. Sam was and always will be on of the great ones. With great regard and sympathy to the entire
Sam Lovello family. God Bless.

Coach Lovello was my favorite teacher in middle school and he taught me a lot about self discipline when I wrestled for him in high school back in the early 90's. His motivation helped me push through physical difficulty and formed a mindset that served me well in the military and in my own coaching venture. My thoughts and prayers are lifted up for his family.

To Mr. Lovello's family: I want you to know that he meant the world to many of the students at Glenside Elementary during the 70's. He made quite an impression on us. So much so that we cried when he left. When I saw him a few years ago, he remembered me. That made me feel good. It isn't often that students are blessed to have a teacher like him. I live in Harrisburg now & one of my friends was a wrestler. He too knew of Coach & even met him. When I told him of his passing, he already knew & offered his condolences. I won't be able to attend his funeral but I will be there in spirit. Now I have another 9/11 event to remember. Rest in peace, Mr. Lovello. You were truly one of a kind!

To the Lovello family
I was greatly saddened to hear of your loss. I went to school with Sammy, Jr. high & high school, and am fortunate to have talked briefly to him at our class reunion last year. He was always fun and and full of life. After reading his obituary, I found out that he became an amazing family man, teacher, coach, and an all around great role model. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all at this very sad time.
