He was the husband of Nancy (Walton) Artz, whom he married June 18, 1955.
Born March 29, 1929, in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Ira Stephen and Emma Jane (Morgan) Artz.
Walter was a 1946 graduate of Pottsville High School and a 1950 graduate of Penn State University, where he received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.
He was employed as an electrical engineer with Western Electric, AT&T and Lucent Technologies for 33 years, retiring in 1987.
Walter was a member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church. He served on the church's Board of Trustees, where he was a past president.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by his two daughters, Donna L., wife of Chris H. Sweimler, Sinking Spring; and Deborah A., wife of Daniel S. Christopher, Sinking Spring; and brother, Ira H. Artz, Lewisville, N.C.; three grandchildren: Douglas J. and Bradley A. Sweimler and Caitlyn R. Christopher.
Walter was predeceased by two brothers, Elmer and Clyde Artz; and three sisters: Florence A. Melnichek, E. Lorraine Platt and Esther Artz.
A viewing will be held Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. Burial will follow in Schuylkill Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, 1 Carlisle Ave., Reading, PA 19609.
