WOLCOTT – Brian Lewis Carrington age 70 of Wolcott passed peacefully in the comfort of his home in the loving arms of his wife Denise on Monday, August 12, 2024 after a valiant 8 year struggle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Denise (Slabicki) Carrington of 49 years.
Brian was born on November 24, 1953 in Waterbury (a 4lb preemie) the son of Lois (Von Tobel) and the late Lewis D. Carrington. Like all good Irishman he grew up with many nicknames; Fats, Wildman, Larry, Blop and Uncle Brian to name just a few. His network of friends was immense over the years while attending Sprague, Bunker Hill, St Margaret, Kingsbury, Assumption Prep in Worcester MA and finally graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1971. Brian then went on to further his studies achieving a BA degree in Sociology/Special and Elementary Education from Mt St Mary College in Newburgh NY and then received his Master's degree in Counseling from Western CT State University. His long and esteemed career in education began with teaching special needs students at City Hill Middle School in Naugatuck where he met even more lifelong friends. He worked from the day he was 16, washing pots and pans in the kitchen of St Mary's Hospital, ran the pizza stand a Lake Quassapaug Amusement Park and even drove taxi and dispatched for Yellow Cab in Waterbury. Even while teaching he was a maintenance engineer (janitor) at the Carrington Co. in Southington, and he worked at the Liquor Bazaar in Watertown. After 9 years of teaching, he left to join the ranks of the family business, the Carrington Co., having a very successful career in sales.
Brian loved his many friends, students and customers alike but the greatest gift he ever received in his life, besides his wife, was on August 6, 2003, when he she saved his life with the amazing donation of one of her kidneys. For 21 years, he would brag about his miracle in life and then fact that he was an Irishman with a Polish kidney. Brian was an animal lover, and enjoyed his dogs; Pookie, Shadow, and his buddy, Carney. Brian and Denise would travel frequently to the island of St Maartin, when in 1999 they survived a Cat 4 hurricane, "Lenny". Later in life, Brian developed an interest in Amateur photography ad he enjoyed boasting that he was published in the Orleans MA Chamber of Commerce magazine. Along the way, he also amassed numerous awards and ribbons in photography at the Wolcott Country Fair. As any good Irishman, Brian was an avid storyteller, loved sharing stories about his Yellow Cab days and many other tales when as soon as he mentioned the topic, people would leave the room because they had heard the story so many times. Brian and three other friends were avid UCONN Women's Basketball season ticket holders and, for some reason, they always made Brian the designated to all of the games. Brian was a Justice of Peace for the Town of Wolcott and felt privileged to have officiated the marriage of his niece, Samantha (Paul) Charette. He was also one the of original incorporators of the Wolcott Land Conservation Trust (W.L.C.T.)
As our family mourns the loss of a special husband, son, brother, uncle and friend, we are deeply touched by the outpouring of support from family, friends and the community. The considerate and thoughtful care provided by The Hartford Hospital Transplant Team including Dr Joseph Tremaglio, Jaclyn Colfer PA-C and his cancer doctors; Dr Timothy Boyd, Dr Jaykumar Thumar, Dr Christopher Doucette, Dr Clinton Kuwada and his special friend his transplant surgeon, Dr Anne Lally and PA-C John NcNab along with his primary care physician, Dr Letterio Ascituo and to the HHC Hospice Care at Home all who are dedicated to their profession and have been a great source of comfort during this difficult time and the family is grateful beyond words can express.
Left to honor his memory, besides his devoted, loving wife and mother, are his siblings and their spouses; Beverly (Paul) Pashchuk of PA, Cheryl (Dave) Jensen and sister-in-law, Michelle (John) Griffin all of Waterbury. Brian also leaves many nieces, nephews, great nephews and great nephews. He also leaves his best friend since grammar school, Frank (Debra) Nardelli and family of Wolcott and from his teaching years, Ed (Wendy) Furs and family of VT.
Funeral services for Mr. Carrington will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Basil the Great Parish, 525 Woodtick Rd Wolcott. At Brian's specific request there will be no calling hours and burial at Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown will be private.
