John Garlock Obituary

MERIDEN - John Wesley Garlock, Sr., passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret DiStefano Garlock for over 62 years.

He was born on March 6, 1920 to the late John and Josphine Gosselin Garlock in Tracy. John worked in New Hampshire with the CCC, The Civilian Conservation Corp. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He went on to work for New Departure for more than 30 years. On March 6, our Dad would have celebrated his 90th birthday.

He was a member of the Retired Workers Local 987, and served as president for several years. He was also a member of the Antique Veterans. He spent many happy hours getting the World War II monument on Broad Street built. Our Dad served on the Meriden City Council for eight years and was a member of the Parking Commission. He also served as a member of the Salvation Army and the Meriden Community Action Agency.

Our Dad loved to go to all the softball games and the little league games to watch his grandchildren play. He also spent many hours each night talking to his special friend Matt Dominello, finding out what went on in the city that day.
John is survived by his four children, John and his wife, Alma; his daughters, Gail Daniels, Marie Grodzicki and Kathy Showerda and her husband, Michael; eight grandchildren, Lisa Dahn, Jeffrey Grodzicki, Peter Daniels, Lesley Garlock, Michele Daly, John Garlock and Jesse and Jamie Showerda. Poppie will always be missed by his 16 great-grandchildren. John was predeceased by his sister, Gert Avery and her husband, Elwood; and his sons-in-law, Peter Daniels and Chester Grodzicki.

The funeral will be held on Friday, March 5, at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, on Thursday, March 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Joseph School, 159 W. Main St., Meriden, 06451 or to The Franciscan Home Care, 267 Finch Ave., Meriden, 06451.
Gail and Marie would like to thank the Franciscan Home Care and Masonic Hospital for the wonderful care given to our father. A special thank you to Ray, our Dad's aide. A very special thank you to our good friend Colleen Goglia for all she did for us over the years. www.jferryfh.com.

John, Gail, Kathy and Marie:
Our deepest sympathy to all of you on the loss of your father. I am sorry that we could not be there for you as we were out of town. John was a wonderful man, and he loved his family and city. We shared many chats and laughs about family experiences and politics. Some of them were about common sense and logic, or the lack of. He always took the time to listen not only to constituents but to people in general. He was a real gentleman. It was my privilege to have worked with him all these years at city hall. I will miss him dearly.

Garlock family:
My deepest sympathy is extended to all of on the loss of your Dad. I have such fond memories of him with my 37 years of working with the city, the democratic functions, meetings and birthdays we celebrated at city hall. I will miss him so so much. They do not make people like him any more. I guess your Mom wanted him with her. I feel bad that I was out of state when he passed, but knowing John I think he planned it that way, I always remember he never liked me close, as I am writing this I am smiling, he always made me laugh. I could write a book on the 37 years I knew John and cherished our friendship.

I met your Dad in 1985,what a wonderful man.John had that boyish but stern look that was so likeable. He loved his city but he loved his family more.He always talked about the kids and he never missed attending a game which was a full time job watching his super star grandkids playing in all sports year round.I will always cherish the times we spent together at the parks and City Hall with his side kick Matt. The advice he gave me was well appreciated and also a little slap behind the head to do better when I didn't listen to him. I will truly miss him. He was a super person that you could count on and he worked hard in behalf of the people (especially the kids and veterans in Meriden). He helped a lot of people over the years with his expertise and knowhow to get things done. May God bless all of the Garlock family in this time of need and our deepest sympathy and prayers will always be with you.

To the Garlock family,
Let me first extend my deep sympathy on the passing of your Dad. My memories of Jack go way back to Union St. I can still see him playing ball with us in the street even though he was a few years older than us. He never forgot me over the years and when we met, he would always reminice about those days. Jack was a class guy and a great friend. God bless him and may he forever rest in peace.

To the Garlock Family,

I fondly remember your Dad as a caring witty person, who would come to the Sr. Ctr. and sit by my desk - always greeting me with "Hi, Doll". I loved to listen to him and Matt go back and forth about City issues, but always remaining good friends. I will sincerely cherish those days and am proud to have known your Dad.
