John Lunny Obituary

John Francis Lunny
March 19, 2024
John Francis Lunny, Jr., 83, departed this life on March 19, 2024 at Midstate Medical Center after a valiant battle with cancer. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his loving family. John was the husband of Brenda J. (Rice) Lunny for 52 years. Born in New Haven, CT on January 21, 1941, he was the son of the late John F. and Ruth M. (McKinnion) Lunny Sr. John had a sixth year college degree and attended SCSU and Fairfield University. He was a teacher in North Branford and then in Wallingford, where he retired from Dag Hammarskjold Middle School. Among John's many activities, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and went on several fishing trips to Montana. He also loved hiking in Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire with his wife and the Mattingly's. John also enjoyed skiing in Vermont, playing basketball and softball and he was an avid reader, often reading and reciting poetry. In addition to all of this, John was gifted artistically and often made signs and pictures for friends and family. John spent most mornings with friends at his favorite place, the Wallingford Rod & Gun Club. His sense of humor and quick wit were appreciated by many. Besides his loving wife Brenda, John is survived by his daughter, Maura Cautela (Sal) and his grandson, Sean Cautela. He is also survived by his brother James Lunny and his sister Ruth Rizzo (Sal). In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his son Neil Lunny and his sister-in-law, Anne Lunny. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 12:00 PM at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm Street, Wallingford. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation prior to the service on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to the 'Cystic Fibrosis Foundation' at P.O. I was friends with John at the Wallingford Rod and Gun Club. I was saddened to hear of his passing. John was a well educated, soft spoken, and courteous man. A true gentleman. It was always a pleasure to speak with him over a cup of coffee at the club. In his prime John was an awesome trap shooter. He could crush clays out of the trap house faster than anyone I knew. He was admired by all the retirees at our "noon" trap shoot. John always left the club with these parting words, "Keep the Faith", and those were the final words I heard John speak. I will remember him fondly. My condolences go out to his entire family. Tom Cavaliere Naugatuck, CT.
