John Nigro Obituary

John S. Nigro, 89, went to meet his Lord and Savior on September 23, 2023 after a brief illness. John was the son of Matthew and Rosina (Nesci) Nigro and the husband of 63 years to the late Carrie Ann Nigro. John was born in Meriden, CT and lived in Berlin, CT, until he moved to Fairhaven, MA, where he resided until his death.

John was a consummate educator who devoted 50 years of his life teaching business at North Haven High School as well as several colleges in the state. John was dedicated to teaching and helping others. He was a strong advocate for students and offered a compassionate ear to anyone who needed it.

Post retirement, John volunteered for the chaplain's office at MidState Medical Center. He was a parishioner and reader at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. John enjoyed cooking and baking family recipes and sharing the results with others. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.

John is survived by his daughters, Rosemarie (Christian) Bartholomew of Durham, CT and Leanne (Steven) Pratt of Fairhaven, MA; 5 grandchildren, Cariese Hinckley, Matthew Bartholomew, Alyssa (Stuart) King, Julianna Pratt and Nicholas Bartholomew. Bringing special joy to his life were his 3 great-grandchildren, Nathan Hinckley, Ian King and Eliza King.

A mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday, October 6, 2023 at 12:00 noon at Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will immediately follow mass at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meriden, CT. His cremains will be interred in the family plot next to his wife and parents.

Mr. Nigro was my notehand teacher when I was in high school at NHHS. I always found him patient, kind and a great educator. Even into my 70s, I still use the skills I learned from him. He was one of my favorite teachers. As a teacher myself, I hope it helps his family to know how much he was appreciated and respected.

Leanne and Rosemarie- Our sympathy goes out to you all. I will never forget your father and mother. They always treated me like daughter #3! If there was work to be done, I helped, and if there was food to eat, I enjoyed many meals with you; Just as Leanne did at my house. Elmwood Drive will always be special because of your parents and the time spent there with you all. Your dad encouraged me to become a teacher, like him! Going to his HS to set up desks and books is something I'll never forget. Then when I had Selena- He was so cute with her...called her the kicker! He always enjoyed catching up on family events, and sharing recipes, and memories of OLMC and Italy. Hope those memories help you through the days when you're missing dad and mom. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. We love you.
With love & sympathy, Rose & Carl, Selena & Luke

To the Nigro family,

I was fortunate enough to have Mr. Nigro as my accounting instructor at Briarwood College. He was a warm caring teacher who made the class fun. His gentle demeanor drew you in to the point where you enjoyed the class. When my aunt and fellow teacher Susan Adkins passed away, Mr. Nigro came to the wake and what a pleasure it was to see him again. His warm condolences and funny stories will never be forgotten. May you enjoy Heaven Mr. Nigro. You have earned your reward.

Dear Rosemarie and Leanne: My sincerest condolences to you and your families on the passing of your father. He was a willing and gracious mentor to me when I started my fulltime career at North Haven High School in the Business Department in the late 1970's. May he rest in peace.
