Peter McPhedran Obituary

Peter McPhedran died in Cheshire on April 7, 2024 at age 87, peacefully on hospice care at home.
The son of F. Maurice and Jane Grace McPhedran, Peter grew up in Philadelphia. He graduated from Germantown Friends (Quaker) School, Harvard College, and Harvard Medical School. He married Letitia Ellicott Wood, known as Letty, in 1959. They raised their family in North Haven, where they lived for almost 60 years. Peter loved spending time with family and friends. He was an avid hiker and paddler, and traveled widely with Letty.
Peter worked as a doctor at Yale-New Haven Hospital for most of his career, where he was Professor of Internal Medicine and Laboratory Medicine. His work at Yale involved caring for patients, serving as director of the Clinical Hematology Laboratory, teaching medical students, and research. He also volunteered in neighborhood clinics in New Haven, and worked early in his career for the Public Health Service in Atlanta. Peter is remembered by his colleagues and students for his kindness, generosity, and dedication to his patients.
Peter is survived by three children and five grandchildren; his wife Letty died in 2022. Friends are welcome to join a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on May 26, 2024 at the Unitarian Society of New Haven, 700 Hartford Turnpike, Hamden, 06517. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Peter's name to the Appalachian Mountain Club.

My condolences to Peter's family and friends. I was Peter's resident from 1975 through 1978, and he taught me much of what I know about caring for patients, running a clinical laboratory and how to best physician one can be. He was patient, kind, conscientious and a wonderful role model. I will always be grateful for the critical role he played in my developing my skills and character as a hematologist.

We will miss Peter McPhedran and his dear wife, Letty, who devoted themselves to serving humanity and also forged a deep bond with the natural world, especially through river paddling and hiking. Peter had excellent paddling skills and we enjoyed canoeing with Peter and Letty.
