Philip Descoteaux Obituary

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Philip L. Descoteaux, 84, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, in the Holyoke Soldier's Home.

He was born Oct. 19, 1923, to the late Joseph and Celina Descoteaux. He worked in appliances services for Baystate Gas for over 21 years. He then, went on to work as a production manager for over 11 years at Spartan Saw Works in Agawam, Mass. Philip proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader in W. Springfield, Mass. Philip also volunteered at the W. Springfield Library, was a member of the Golden Agers, the W. Springfield Senior Center, and their carving club who helped make the sign for the town library.

He leaves his loving wife, June E. (Fillio) of W. Springfield, Mass.; his beloved children, Richard B., of Newburyport, Mass., Jeanne D. Chmielewski and her husband, Stanley Jr., of Southington, and Sherry L. Descoteaux, of W. Springfield; cherished grandchildren, Adam and Erin Descoteaux, Michael Chmielewski and Judith Wayton; caring sisters, Claire Wilson, Cecile Babineau and Simone Bajowski; along with several nieces and a nephew. Philip was predeceased by his son, Gary S. Descoteaux in 1960; and his brother, Rene J. Descoteaux; and his daughter-in-law, Ann (Herlihy) Descoteaux.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Toomey-O'Brien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., W. Springfield followed by a 10 a.m. liturgy of Christian burial in St. Thomas Church, 47 Pine St., W. Springfield. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Kings Highway, W. Springfield. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holyoke Soldier's Home, Treasure's Office, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, Mass. 01040 or to the Ann Descoteaux Scholarship Fund, Newburyport 5 Cent Bank, 63 State St., Newburyport, Mass. 01950.
