Richard Caracciolo Obituary

Richard A. Caracciolo

Greenfield, MA - Richard A. Caracciolo, age 62, of Greenfield, MA, formerly of Syosset, NY, passed away on June 5, 2025. He was a beloved brother to Anne Zimmerman (David) and Mary Dell'Abate (Gary), and a devoted uncle to Ashley Santana (José, and son Tomás), Allison Shannon (Jack), Drew Zimmerman (Corrie Asseo), Jackson Dell'Abate (Evelyn Hitchcock), and Lucas Dell'Abate. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Ruth Caracciolo, and his infant brother James.

Rich earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UMass Amherst and spent 29 years at Hedberg/Steelcase in Enfield, CT, where he formed lasting friendships-often marked by lunchtime runs with colleagues. He built a rich, 40+year life in Greenfield, drawn by its quiet beauty and strong community spirit.

A lifelong athlete and outdoorsman, Rich loved hiking, biking, running, cross-country skiing, and pickleball. He had a gentle soul and a deep affection for animals, especially his cherished cats, Phoenix and Buckley.

Family was central to Rich's life. He spent most summer vacations with them, recently hiking Yosemite and biking Lake Tahoe. One favorite memory: a spontaneous sunset swim in Tahoe with his nephew, reached by navigating steep terrain to a hidden beach-pure Rich in spirit.

His Western Massachusetts friends were like family, regularly gathering for Monday nights at Paul's garage, Friday night lights, and weekend pickleball. Rich also loved exploring New England's best craft beers, always sharing new finds with friends and family. He embraced life with energy and endless activity. He was socially conscious, well-read, and always up for a thoughtful debate.

A private burial will be held, with a celebration of life to follow in Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bianca's Furry Friends at North Shore Animal League in his name: www.animalleague.org/RichardCaracciolo

I am heartbroken at Rich´s passing. He had been a dear friend ever since knowing him from our work in Brattleboro. We shared much in common including deep appreciation for the outdoors and the joy of living with cats. He will forever be in my thoughts and memories.

So saddened by Rich's passing, by thankful to have known him for 30 years working at Hedberg. What a great guy. We often talked about both growing on Long Island and being Yankee fans. Rich will be greatly missed.
