Janet Mann Obituary

Janet Lynn Doyel Mann

With great sadness, I announce the passing of Janet Lynn Doyel Mann, who left us in Porterville on December 20, 2024.

Janet was born in Porterville at the old Porterville Hospital on February 8, 1951, to Lester and Betty Doyel. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty; her brother, Bob; and her grandparents, along with other relatives and close friends.

Janet was part of the West Putnam group that graduated from Porterville Union High School in 1969. She loved school and was active in class council and student council, as well as playing clarinet in Buck Saffer's notorious Panther Band. Though she was small in stature, Janet was full of spunk and formed several lasting friendships during her high school years that continued throughout her life. After graduating, Janet attended Porterville College, where she was a cheerleader. Later in life, she became the cheerleading adviser at Monache High School, dedicating much of her time to working with the girls.

Janet continued her education and earned a Master's Degree from Bakersfield State University, all while raising two children as a single mother. Her parents provided a great deal of support during this challenging time, and Janet's determination to raise her children was truly commendable. Janet had a deep love for animals and shared her life with many pets. I fondly remember a trip we took with her little dachshund, Magnum. Despite him being sick, she insisted he join us, and he traveled all the way to Oregon and back, with plenty of bathroom stops along the way. It was a long journey filled with fun and unforgettable moments.

While pursuing her degree in education, Janet babysat to support her family. She became like a second mom to my children Shannon, Brett, Brooke, and Megan Bradley. They enjoyed game nights and went on several trips together, creating cherished memories. Janet and I had been friends since kindergarten.

Janet became a beloved and sought-after teacher. She began her career at Alta Vista and later moved to Monte Vista, a new school near her home. Her love for her students was evident, and they adored her in return. She initiated an after-school drama program to benefit her students, and one of her former students, Tasha, later became a teacher herself and took over the drama program, maintaining a connection with Janet and Davids family during Janet's illness. Janet eventually married her neighbor, David Mann, who witnessed her struggles as a single mother. He was her Prince Valiant, and together they formed a blended family with his son, Max. By this time, Janet's family life was well established. Although Janet began substitute teaching to keep busy and continue her passion for teaching, her health became a barrier. Nonetheless, she remained active with her friends, including Barbara Bonnar Loehner, with whom she formed a significant friendship while teaching at Monte Vista. Barbara provided invaluable support to Janet toward the end of her life. Despite her professional success, Janet often said her greatest accomplishments were her children and granddaughters, whom she loved unconditionally. She was especially proud of her father and cherished the opportunity to celebrate his 99th birthday in September. Sadly, he passed away just a few days after Janet.

Janet is survived by her husband, David Mann, who was dedicated to her care during her last years until he became unable to physically care for her. He arranged for her to live in a retirement apartment where she could have her precious Chihuahua, Molly, by her side and ensured she received 24-hour care.

Janet also leaves behind her son, Max Mann; her son, Christopher Swindle; her daughter, Leslie Glowacki, and her husband Rob; and her twin granddaughters, Katie and Gracie Glowacki.

I know you are at peace now, free from any physical suffering. You have left behind countless friends who will carry your memories in our hearts. Until we meet again.

There will be a Celebration of Life on February 1st at 11:00 AM at the Elk's Lodge. Lunch will be served. Please bring a special story or memory to share.

I knew Janet in high school as a member of the class of 1969. Janet was part of the West Putnam gang and was one of the first of that group to reach out to me. She was always friendly and kind. We lost touch after high school. We reconnected virtually on Facebook. I was not surprised to see that Janet also was a teacher. I´m sure her students loved her. I enjoyed seeing pictures of her darling granddaughters. I can see from reading her obituary that family and friends were her priority. What a blessing Janet was to many. Her friendship with Janet Bradley was so unique and special. We were lucky to grow up where and when we did. Peace and comfort to her family and friends.

I spent many summers in Porterville when I was young with my Uncle Les, Aunt Betty and Janet. Being the younger cousin Janet was very tolerant with me. I remember being able to tag along cruising Main St. with a bunch of girls on a Saturday afternoon. Some had curlers in their hair getting ready to go out that night. After she was married she would have me over to her apartment and then her home. We would always make raspberry turnovers and enjoy them together.

My Mother Mrs. Adam was Leslie's Kindergarten teacher. I helped her a lot of times in her class and just fell in love with Leslie and her Mom. RIP Janet. Praying for Leslie and Christopher..

My dear dear cousin! How I love you. Lots of memories while growing up. Like the time we disobeyed your dad on your little Honda and he tracked us down! Yikes
Our road trip to Missouri when we were just a wee bit older! HA!
You are missed. I´ve come to Porterville and you aren´t here.
But I know you are with the many we have loved.
