Alice Grunberg Obituary

Alice Isert Grunberg

Jan. 23, 1922 - Nov. 4, 2016

Our mother, Alice Wilhelmina Isert Grunberg (94), born in Stockton, CA, passed away of Heart Failure. Mom's lineage goes back to John Billington who came to America on the Mayflower, and to the 1850s when her great-great grandfather had the blacksmith shop at the edge of McLeod Lake, Stockton. She was especially proud of her great-grandfather, Thomas Asbury Miller, who

invented and patented the catepillar wheel (Patent #706069, May 21, 1915), which was developed by Benjamin Holt. Mom's entire family predeceased her: younger brother Julius (1929), mother Cecil "Cecelia" Craig Isert (1976), father Julius Emil Isert (1983), and older brother, Emil (1989). She was also predeceased by her former husband, George Grunberg (2014). It wasn't easy being the last of her generation when everyone was gone, except her two children and their families. Mom loved us all: daughter, Virginia Grunberg

Marion and son-in-law, Eugene (Lodi). She always said Eugene was like a son because he'd been around since he was 16, and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for her. She also leaves her loving son, Gerry George Grunberg and wife Gail (Arizona). When our mom was 10 she began performing with her Accordian on the Pfeiffer Radio Station. She attended El Dorado Grammer School and graduated from Stockton High School (1940). Mom married dad a few weeks after graduation. When Virginia was 3, and Gerry was 5-months old, dad was drafted into World War II. Mom found herself caring for two small children while he served as an Army Military Policeman (MP), New York City. Alice worked for the Stockton Main Post Office during the war, and after the war she had to give up her job to a returning serviceman (as was the practice at that time). Mom returned to being a homemaker until we were teenagers. In 1946 our dad's mother deeded them an acre of land, Alice drew up plans for a home and they built the home with their own hands using Cinder Blocks. They moved into their home in 1954. All their lives it always amazed them what they had accomplished together. They remained friends all their lives, and they lived on the Grunberg property (which remained in the family 95-years). Alice retired from Hickinbotham Brothers in 1993 after 30-years as Bookkeeper. After retiring she volunteered 11-years at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop. Alice was known to all because she worked the cash register. If you ever met our mom, you know that her first question was, "When's your birthday?" and with your answer she had you all summed up by your Horoscope sign. Grandma Alice leaves 3 grandchildren: Pamela Marion-Ribitch (Mark) of Stockton, Steven Marion (Connie) of Acampo, and

Michael Marion (Brenda) of El Dorado Hills. Grandma Alice leaves 5 great-grandchildren Matthew Marion (Lorna) of Stockton, Stephanie Marion and Steven Marion (Lodi), and

Melissa Marion and Alex Marion (El Dorado Hills). Grandma Alice leaves one Great-Great Grandson, Duncan Marion.

Virginia wishes to acknowledge Dr. Robin Wong (Stockton),

Ashley Place Assisted Living (Lodi) where mom enjoyed 5 years, and Hospice of San Joaquin where mom received

2-days of exceptionally good care. As per mom's wishes no funeral services will be held.

Internment Rural Cemetery, Stockton, CA.

I am so sorry to hear of Alice's passing. She was a dear friend to my mother Marijean Rea. After my mother's passing I enjoyed staying in touch with Alice and visiting her at Ashley Place. She was always so positive and kind to everyone. I will truly miss her friendship. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

My prayers go out to your family. So very glad I was able to talk to Alice a few times while her stay at Ashley Place. I told her I would remember that name because it is my grand daughters name. My memories of Alice is always at Christmas. She would have these really big Christmas Stockings an collect all these little gifts and fill the stockings. It was always so much fun. She was a very special lady!! Love to your family....Tinky Grunberg
