George Danskin Obituary

New Paltz, NY

George A. Danskin, 69, passed away at home on January 28, 2008 after suffering complications from lung cancer. He had lived in New Paltz since 1968.

Born in Atlanta, GA, George grew up in Cranford, NJ. He graduated from the University of Montana, Missoula in 1964. He then joined the Navy serving aboard aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was employed by the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation in New Paltz in 1968, retiring from Albany as that agency's Chief Permit Administrator in 1996. George retired from the Naval Reserve Intelligence Program in 1989.

Since retirement, George devoted himself to fly fishing and community service, and also worked in real estate sales. He held leadership positions in the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail Association, Wallkill Valley Land Trust, Town Grievance Review Board, and The Paltz Club. George also fostered the New Paltz Sister City project with Osa-cho and Niimi-shi, Japan, and served as a family budget counselor for the County Cooperative Extension. Most recently he chaired the New Paltz Village Planning Board.

George is survived by his wife, Victoria; daughters, Susan and Melissa, and their mother, Marjorie.

A memorial service will be held at the New Paltz Reformed Church, 92 Huguenot St., New Paltz, NY 12561 on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory to Hospice of Ulster County, Hospice Foundation, Memorial Gift Program, 34 Broadway, Kingston, NY 12401 or Wallkill Valley Rail Trail Association, P.O. Box 1048, New Paltz, NY 12561-1048.
