Frank Robertson Obituary

Frank G. Robertson

Red Bluff, CA

Frank Gordon Robertson passed away peacefully at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Red Bluff, California on December 2, 2016. He was 91 years of age. He was in the constant presence of the love of his life, Judy, and surrounded by his beloved children and friends.

Frank was born to Robert and Minerva Robertson in Southgate California on June 9, 1925. In 1940, while he was still in high school, the family moved to Anderson, California. After graduating from high school in June of 1943, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard, where he served until the end of World War II. After his discharge from military service, he attended Chico State College, and lived in "Vets Village", located on the campus. He graduated from Chico State in 1950 with a Bachelor's Degree in his course of study, as well as a Master's Degree in Education. Frank was awarded one of the first M.A., Ed. degrees ever bestowed by Chico State College at that time, and it proved essential as he advanced his administrative career in education over the years.

In the fall of 1950 he started his teaching career back at Anderson High School as a PE teacher, English teacher and Coach, and in the early years, his coaching duties included football, basketball, baseball and tennis. Later in his coaching career, he focused specifically on basketball, where he coached both the junior varsity and varsity teams during some years. Coaching was always a passion with Frank, and his basketball teams won 9 league championships, numerous regional tournaments, and accumulated a combined record of 193 wins and 28 loses. As a coach, Frank was respected by his peers and loved by his players.

In 1965, he accepted the position of Vice Principal at the newly-built Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, where he served in that capacity until 1969. It was at this juncture in his career that he accepted the position of Superintendent of Schools of the Anderson Union High School District. He retired in 1982, and he always considered the approval, design and construction of West Valley High School to be his greatest career accomplishment.

Frank was also a skilled carpenter and builder. He built four of his own homes as well as mountain cabins, a "spec" home, and he often assisted in the construction of numerous homes and buildings for his friends and family.

Frank lived an extremely active life with his wife, Judy, and he was always a very good athlete. This lifestyle was established while playing intramural sports at Chico State, where he boxed, and played basketball and tennis. He was an accomplished fast-pitch softball pitcher in his younger years, and he loved to play tennis and golf well into his later years, but the competition was fierce when competing in these later sports with his wife Judy.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 44 years, Judy Robertson, son Bob Robertson of Fernley Nevada, son Eric Robertson (Cathy) of Chico, daughters Jo Ann Krummen of Los Gatos, Tracy Battaglia of Redding, and Kelly Boban of Cottonwood, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

At Frank's request, there will be no memorial services, and in lieu of flowers, please donate to:

Memories and Condolences
for Frank Robertson

Not sure what to say?

March 26, 2018

Frank, Mr. Robertson, was very kind to me when I was a student at Pleasant Valley Senior High. My father had recently died and I will always remember Mr Robertson for showing me how to be an empathetic, kind masculine figure. I will carry his kindness the rest of my life. I first met Frank when I went on the police dept here in Anderson and he was at Anderson High. I believe he was dean of boys then. Frank was one of the nicest men I have ever met. Always had a smile on his face and I believe the students really liked him. God bless his family in their loss.

I really enjoyed and respected Frank as a Counselor and Teacher when I was an AUHS student (class of '57). Better still, when he lived down by the Sacramento River in Anderson, he was surrounded by my aunts, uncles, and cousins from the Bauer family: Bauers, McNultys, Ulbergs, and Robertsons. What wonderful family gatherings there were back in those days.

It seems that Frank Robertson passed on his teaching and enlightening skills to his son Bob Robertson. I never met him myself but all I have read I recognize in his son as he welcomed me into the medical field, guided me and pushed me to reach for my dreams. He taught me to believe in myself. This sounds much like the man Frank Robertson you all have described.

Frank and my Dad worked together at PVHS. I have great memories of the time our families spent together. I remember him as a warm and caring man and am sad to hear of your loss.

I remember Mr. Robertson as Anderson High School Superintendent when I attended school there in the 1970s. He always seemed like a kind and influential man to me when I covered school-board meetings for the Anderson Valley Press in the early 1980s. My condolences go our to his family and loved ones at this trying time.
