Michael Norman Obituary

Michael "Mike" Paul Norman

Redding, CA

08/13/1954 - 04/04/2016

Michael "Mike" Paul Norman passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, April 4, 2016 in Redding, California at the age of 61.

Mike is survived by his mother, Myrle Marion Norman; Aunt and Uncle: Carol and Dennis Metzler; Brother, Bud Norman; Sister, Kathleen Norman; Daughters, Brandy Norman-Wiebenga and Sarah Cariss; Son, Michael Norman; Grandsons, Cayden, Isaac, Jack and Gavin; ex-wife, Kathy McKinzie; Girlfriend, Diane Klein and countless other family members and friends.

Mike was born on August 13, 1954 in San Francisco, California to Julius & Myrle Norman. He grew up in Daily City, California where as a kid he surfed, scuba dived, played with firecrackers and rode his bike all over town. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1972. Mike was always a hard worker but he quickly realized he didn't like anyone telling him what to do so he decided to move to New Mexico to open a restaurant with a friend. Mike had a lifelong love affair with fried chicken and shortly after moving to New Mexico he met a girl named Kathy while ordering at KFC.

Mike married Virginia Kathleen "Kathy" McKinzie, on October 4, 1980. After having three children, Mike and Kathy moved to the Redding area. They opened Sunset Express Restaurant in Palo Cedro, California where they worked together. Over the years Mike opened multiple small businesses, each more rewarding then the last. He eventually got back to his childhood by opening Collector's Choice, a comic book and sports collectable store. Mike started Collector's Choice with a small filing cabinet full of his favorite comic books and over the years grew it into the successful collectible store it was until he passed.

Mike was like that, he knew what he wanted and went for it. He didn't listen to anybody that told him he couldn't do something. That was his attitude toward Hawaiian shirts too, Lord knows we all told him how ridiculous he looked. He just laughed.

We loved his ability to laugh at any situation. Over the last few years, Mike started getting back to the things he loved to do. He loved riding motorcycles, BBQing with friends, playing golf, visiting his grandsons, spending time with his sweetie and traveling as much as possible.

His other hobbies included shooting woodpeckers in his underwear with a BB gun at 6 in the morning, reading the newspaper during dinner and sharing his love for Ronald Reagan with anyone who would listen. He also loved the 49ers and talking to friends about great moments in sports history.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 13th from 4-7pm at Allen & Dahl Funeral Home on Eureka Way. The funeral service will be at 10AM on Thursday, April 14th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2040 Walnut Ave, Redding, CA 96002 with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mike's life. In honor of Mike's fun-loving spirit and personal sense of style, all are encouraged to join his family in wearing Hawaiian print to the funeral service.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks everyone to do a random act of kindness in Mike's name.
