A man's legacy lives on in the thoughts and actions of those whose lives he touched and influenced. Nobody who met Keith LeClair came away from the encounter unmoved. He breathes new life each time a memory of him compels an act of passion or compassion Though eventually bowed by a foe that was both cruel and relentless his message to us was one of hope, not despair the

One of my first little league memories is of lefthanded Keith hitting a pop fly down the right field line and plopping it into the short weeds and ivy at the Walpole little league field for a ground rule home run. As high school teammates, Keith became a great inspiration to me. His examples of expectation setting and determination to carry out intentions are truly unique and will forever affect my path.

Baseball has been a positive influence in the life of my entire family for generations. Keith LeClair emboddied all that was good about about a man. I am thankful he shared himself with young men eager to learn from him - players and spectators alike. He will always be remembered!

Dear Lynn and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. As I look into the starry sky tonight, there is one new star shining ever so bright. That must be Keith, grateful for his time here on Earth, but even more thankful to be in Heaven watching over all his family and friends. He always will be one shining star. Dear Kevin and Family,
Our prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. Having grown up in Walpole I had the pleasure of knowing the Leclair family. A very strong family who always made you happy you had run into them somewhere along the day. Keith will be sadly missed. From reading the memories in this guest book he has touched the lives of many young people who will carry on his great personality. May God walk with you all till you meet again.

My fondest memories are of Keith's first year as head coach at Western, at age 25. I had known Keith as a player, assistant coach and as now as head coach. He was so excited and poised for the greatness that we all came to see over the past 15 years. Our relationship, especially that first year, and our enduring friendship over the years was like a father-son relationship that I will always cherish. I regret that my duties at Western prevented me from being with Lynn and the "Western Baseball Family" to celebrate his life. He will always be in my heart.

You taught my daughter Julie in kindergarten at Fairview Elementary School in Sylva, that was right before Audry was born. You had such grace about you and it showed in everything you did. Your love for the children was also evident. May our wonderful Lord wrap you in His loving arms right now and hold on to you and Keith's family extra tight. May God bless you.

Though I never had a chance to meet Keith personally, I began to admire the example he set for all of us who eventually must face our own death. The love the East Carolina family has shown for him is second to none since I've been a loyal pirate supporter (class of 68). I did experience a little of the love his players showed him after the regional win in Kinston when the players began to rock the van he was watching the game from. I was listening to the game on the radio heading to my family's beach house in Topsail when I decided to stop and view some of the game from outside looking in. Tears were in my eyes after the players celebrated around the van. My only regret is that I did not get to know #23 but I will always remember the hall of fame ceremony at Dowdy Ficklin stadium as well as how important it is to get to wear #23 as a pirate base ball player. I wish the family of Keith and all those touched by him so deeply an inner peace and strength fo draw from in this time of sadness.

My name is Joe Milliken and I am high school friend and classmate of Keith. I am now a sports editor and have written a few articles about Keith over the last couple years. I was lucky enough to have contact (through e-mail) with Keith over those couple of years and I am no doubt, a better person for having known him. Many of his friends and classmates here in New Hampshire and Vermont now know of Keith's many accomplishments through my articles, and I am truly honored to have been able to help spread the word and meaning of his legacy. To Lynn, Audrey and D.J., may God bless you, and your husband and father will never be forgotten by us in New England. Go Red Sox...

Coach LeClair is truly the 'voice of the Pirates'. His faith in God, his family & his ECU family were his greatest accomplishments. May God continue to strengthen & comfort you in the days ahead.

Dear Jesus,
Monday, you added a superstar to Your team. From his earthly field of dreams to Your heavenly field, Coach LeClair fought his way into extra innings and would have fought even further. But You called his life-game and crowned him with the life well-lived crown of a true champion. Coach LeClair walked down the valley of the shadow of death with grace just as You bore the weight of our sins on your cross with grace. May each purple Bible bear fruit in Your name until the day you return. Jesus, we ask you to surround Lynn, JD, Audrey, Andrew and Doris, Sharon and Brian, Sharlene and Tom, Douglas and Donna, Robert and Christle, family, friends, players, fellow coaches, team-mates, supporters, and the medical support staff with your love, joy, peace, and grace each and every day and night.

To the LeClair Family, Keith was an unbelievable coach, competitor, and a great ambassator for the game of baseball. As a Greenville native and as a member of the UNCG baseball program I had the privalage of being involved with Coach. Knowing that I was from Greenville, he went out of his way every time I saw him to come and speak and catch up on things. Many of my former High School and summer league teammates played for him. He always kept me updated on where and what they were doing. It is an individual like Keith who makes this game what it is today. My prayers are with the family and god bless.

To the family that Coach leaves behind: You are in our thoughts and prayers. I did not say goodbye today, I said so long for now, because I will see him again. I hope all are ready with our Savior so that we can reunite with him again someday. It was truely an honor to play for him when he came in 98-99. He was a true players Coach that everyone played hard for. My son is now 3 and he loves to play baseball and I have not pushed him at all. He wears a baseball shirt with LeClair on the back and the #23 shining. I wish someday that he gets the opportunity that I had to play for the Pirates, so that he can share that bond that Coach has built so strong for all of us. He was a wonderful Coach, Friend and Mentor. I will miss him dearly and all that he stood for. GOD BLESS.

Right now, my wife, Angel, and I are expecting our first child. If it is a boy (and of course I hope it is), you can believe I would love nothing more than to watch him take the field as a Pirate one day at Clark-LeClair Stadium. I just want to watch him take that field and experience the true joy it is to be a Pirate baseball player. Coach LeClair inspired that joy in me and I know his life will continue to inspire for years to come. You can believe I will tell my children of the great Christian man that I had the privilege to call "Coach" as well as friend.

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy is with you. Having worked w/ Coach LeClair during my time at ECU (97-99), he was a true inspiration and role model as a devote family and Christian man. I had the amazing privilege of being in Hennon Stadium the night Western Carolina retired Coach LeClair's jersey! To watch his brave family bring him on the field was so touching and a true testament to what truly was important to him. There is not doubt that he was a great coach of the game...but more importantly than that he was a wonderful son, father, and husband! I hope we will all find comfort in knowing that he is in a better place and we will see him again one day!

Dearest Lynn, Audrey, JD and family,
We think back on all the rough times there have been and talk and cry about them, but it's weird because we always seem to end up laughing about some funny story. John was always in awe of Keith's awesome faith and great sense of humour throughout his illness. They would be talking, and 9 times out of 10 Keith would pass a comment on his eye gaze that would just crack John up. John came over once to see Keith and he's watching the Food Channel on TV. "Why are you watching this?", John asks. "I'm torturing myself" was the reply. We love you guys and will ALWAYS treasure the memories.

The Coach approached his ALS like everything else he did of worth and merit -- with passion and determination. It seems like it was just yesterday that a group of friends and myself were in the area referred to as "the jungle" in the old stadium rooting the Coach and his teams on. I was fortunate enough to be doing Clemson radio this year at Western Carolina when the Catamounts retired Keith's jersey. It was an emotional moment, as you might expect, especially when they wheeled Keith onto the field for the unveiling of the number. I never once heard him complain about what he didn't have to run his program, he took what was given and made the most out of it, always looking out for his players and the program. It was indeed a pleasure to have known and worked with Keith. I will never forget # 23.

Keith will be missed by all who wore purple and gold. I had the opportunity to talk with him through e-mail and we would go on about his Red Sox and other baseball news. He was one of the most knowlegable baseball people I ever knew. The thing is there are many who know baseball, but there are few who know how to coach and Keith was one of those few. He took a bunch of kids and fans and made them believe they could beat the big boys of college baseball. He made us proud winners and proud to say "East Carolina". Keith will live on not just as the guy who made us winners, but the guy who showed us how to live in the face of adversity. He was a man of courage and I'm proud to have known him. Rest well good Pirate.
