Audrey Maslin Obituary

Audrey Florence Maslin died peacefully on May 28, 2013, at the McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield, Oregon. At her bedside were her children and several of her grandchildren. Audrey was born on October 25, 1927, in Roselle, New Jersey, the eldest child of Edward and Eleanor Buttery. She received her B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1949 and married Albert Maslin of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, in June, 1950. (They subsequently divorced in 1978.) Audrey earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from Temple University in 1978. She taught as a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland from 1977-1987 and coordinated the graduate program in counselor education. She established a successful psychology private practice in Frederick until her retirement in the mid-1990s. During her retirement, Audrey first lived in Jupiter, Florida and then moved to Eugene, Oregon in 2006.

Two of Audrey's greatest interests were travel and lifelong learning. In the years following her retirement, she literally "saw the world" traveling to over 40 countries, frequently attending Elderhostel educational programs on various continents. She met many good friends during her travels and wrote entertaining reports back to her family of her travel adventures. In recent years, Audrey was actively engaged in education about environmental issues and the threat of climate change through her church in Eugene, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene, where she joined a warm and welcoming community. Audrey was politically aware and active throughout her life, from serving as the President of the League of Women Voters in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in the 1960s to working as a volunteer during both of the Obama presidential campaigns. She was a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.

She is survived by her three children, Christine Maslin-Cole and husband Ray Cole of Fort Collins, Colorado; Paul Maslin and wife Shawn Doherty of Madison, Wisconsin; and Kay Fullerton and husband Michael Fullerton of Eugene, Oregon; and grandchildren Samuel Maslin, Sarah Maslin, Olivia Doherty-Maslin, Nina Fullerton, Laura Fullerton and Neel Cole. Dr. Maslin is also survived by her sister, Barbara Domangue, of Tequesta, Florida, and a treasured niece and nephew.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene on Sunday, August 4th at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Audrey's family would suggest a donation to the Union of Concerned Scientists or the Unitarian Universalist Church of Eugene in her name.
