Steven Ham Obituary

Steven Carroll Ham

Lubbock - Steven Carroll Ham, 55, of Lubbock, ran into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, June 24, 2021. Steve was born on November 30, 1965 to Tom and Vernell Ham in Lubbock, TX. He graduated from Ropesville High School in 1984 and Angelo State University in 1989. On May 24th, 1987, Steve married the love of his life, Sherry Ann Burson.

Steve's coaching career began in Littlefield, TX and continued in many towns across the state of Texas. From an early age, the call of God was strong on Steve's heart. He answered the call for full time ministry in 1999 and became the pastor of New Haven Community Church in Abilene, TX. One of the highlights of Steve's ministry was leading children from the Four Way to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. His life verse was 1 Corinthians 9:22b "I have become all things to all men so that I may by all means save some." Steve also served congregations in Ranger and San Leon, TX. He spent the last three years as a special education teacher at O.L. Slaton Middle School in Lubbock, Texas. He was affectionately known as Father Taz, Rabbi Steve, or Pistol Packing Preacher by his parishioners, but his favorite title was Pappy to his two precious grandchildren. He was a passionate servant leader and never spoke in public without mentioning the hope that could be found in Jesus Christ.

Steve leaves behind a rich legacy of love, service, and commitment. He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Carroll, a daughter, Abigail Marie, and his father, Tom. Survivors include his wife, Sherry, daughter, Stephanie Dotson, son-in-law, Jordan Dotson, grandson, Joshua Michael, granddaughter, Landry Abigail, mother, Vernell Ham, numerous extended family members, and many treasured friends. A memorial service honoring Steve's life will be held in the Chapel of First Baptist Church, 2201 Broadway, Lubbock, TX on Monday, June 28th, 2021 at 2 PM. The family would like to thank Bishop Rob Nichols, Andrew Mason, Kevin Scroggins, and Marie Spells for their willingness to facilitate Steve's celebration service. Honorary pallbearers will include Jon Campbell, Gary Hartley, Doug Lanier, Kyle Law, Nathan McMichael, Kevin Orr, Dirk Rambo, Justin Stout, JD Templeton, and Alan West.

The family would like to thank the staff of West Wind Family Medical Clinic and Hospice of Lubbock for their compassionate care. Per Steve's wishes, his body has been donated to science. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to TTUHSC Willed Body Program, 3601 4th St. STOP 6528, Lubbock, TX 79430.

I was the director of the choir from which the boys quartet came. I remember that when it was down to business, I could always count on Steve even thought he made us laugh in the process. I could always count of him for other things as well, and when we got ready to say goodbye as we were going to Brazil, it was with his blessing even as his young age. I understand he want on to do great things in the kingdom of God. I am so grateful for that. Bless you, Steve, as you reunite with our Savior, your children, your father, and Greg. We´ll be there soon.

My deepest sympathies to Vernell, Sherry, Stephanie, and all of Steve's family. Steve always made me laugh. From the days in high school when we could cut up and act like idiots during all of our sports and UIL endeavors, or in our church youth group and singing in our youth quartet together, and up until he came to visit at the passing of my mom.....he made me laugh even then. He kind of had that unique charm that put me and others at ease. You knew he was genuine in the way he cared for others, but he could sure find the hidden humor in just about every situation. I am privileged to know him. As many have said on social media, he was definitely one of the good ones; I'm certain a wonderful husband and father, and an amazing grandfather. Our prayers are with you all.

Coach Ham! You will always be a coach / mentor to me! You were one of my 1st coaches. You taught me so much about sports and just life in general. You were tough on us when we needed it and compassionate when needed. I love you coach! You will always live im my heart.

My words to the family May seem meaningless right now but I must say Steve was a man of GOD. His time on this Earth was very well spent. He did what he did w/ no conviction only live in his heart. Just recently connected back w/ Steve & read many good things he dedicated his faith too. It has been a tremendous example to live. You never said no but now u must go to fulfill ur destiny w/ GOD. I´m not afraid because I have people like u watching over me.Steve it my pleasure. Glad u were my friend.

I wasn´t a close friend of Steve´s but knew him at the Baptist Student Union in college. Even though I we weren´t close friends he was someone I looked up to and admired. I know this is hard for Sherry and his family and close friends. I am sad and I will pray for you all. Amen
