Winters Matthews, 88, of Munday, Texas died at the Munday Nursing Center in Munday, Texas.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Munday Church of Christ with Adrin Fletcher officiating. Burial will be in Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday, Texas under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home in Munday, Texas.
Mrs. Matthews was born near Munday, Texas June 7, 1922 to Dan M. Groves and Laura (Kitchens) Groves. She married H.D. (Hank) Matthews Jr on December 5, 1942 in Fort Worth, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, Granddaughter, Nikki Matthews, a brother, Utah Groves and a sister LaDean Feemester.
She worked with the United Fund, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association. She was director for the Munday Chamber of Commerce for several years and the first woman to serve on the Munday City Council and first woman to serve as Mayor-Pro-Tem. She was also Executive Director of the Munday Housing Authority for 12 years. Mrs. Matthews also worked at McCauley-Smith Funeral Home for several years and retired from the Smith Drug after working there 20 years. She was a graduate of Sunset High School.
Mrs. Matthews has held and helped with many elections, General Elections, school elections, City elections school bond elections and Democrat Primary elections.
Survivors: One Son: Dowell and wife Norma Matthews of Anson, Texas; Two daughters: Susan and Jimmy Burgin of Graham, Texas and Vickie and Larry Albert of Lakewood, Texas; Six Grandchildren; Ten great grandchildren and a whole host of relatives and friends.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home .
