Jon Olpin Obituary
Jon Dennis Olpin, 67, of St. Anthony, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at his home of natural causes.
He was born in Ogden, Utah, to Lawrence E. Olpin and Florence Chase Olpin of Nephi, Utah, on Sept.16, 1940. He was one of two children. For the first years of his life he lived in Vernal, Utah. His father employed by the Forest Service was moved to Portland, Ore., where Dennis was in the second graduating class of the new Wilson High School. He also attended three years at Portland State College.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He met his wife, Carol Ann Potter, at a church Thanksgiving dance. They were married in the Manti, Utah, LDS temple on April Fools' Day 1963, and have been laughing through 44 years as true sweethearts and loving companions. They raised two wonderful children: daughter, Dustin Dee, and son, Jon Shane.
He worked as an auto insurance underwriter, discount office supply manager and was the owner and operator of the biggest and the last office supply store in downtown Portland, Oregon Stamp and Stationery. In his later years, he was a foster grandparent volunteer, a mentor for special school children.
In 2005, Dennis and Carol moved to St. Anthony to retire and be close to family.
They soon became the neighborhood grandparents with a house of treats and a place to have a good time. He enjoyed all who visited. He has overcome several physical challenges to bless our lives and the community.
He is known for his quick wit and amusing humor of one liners. Son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor, he was an amazing man.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant grandson, Jon Drake Olpin. He is survived by his brother, David L. (Kay) Olpin of Provo, Utah; daughter, Dustin Dee (Scott) Johnston and grandson, Madison and granddaughter Kayleena all of Portland, Ore.; son Jon Shane (Kaye) Olpin of Spearfish, S.D.
He is also survived by in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and -nephews, and forever friends; and his wife and caregiver, Carol Olpin of St. Anthony.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at noon in the St. Anthony Stake Center. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:30 until 11:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Bert Flamm Mortuary.
