Earl Ling Obituary

Earl Wesley

LING, JR.

Earl Wesley Ling, Jr. was born April 23, 1937 in Yreka, CA. He passed away February 29, 2008 at the age of 70 at Northern Nevada Medical Center after surgery with his family by his side. Earl has been a resident of Reno for over 30 years working most recently in television broadcasting for KRNV TV for the last six years and previously 15 years with KOLO TV. He started his career in radio at KSYC at age 16 in Yreka, CA. He attended Yreka High School and continued his education at Chico State and graduated with a B.A. from Sacramento State. As a long time Reno resident, Earl was greatly involved in his church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church as a lay reader and as a choir member. He was a past member of the Lions Club and was inducted into the Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

You can always count on Earl's support for Nevada athletics being a supporter and season ticket holder of Nevada Football and Basketball, and more importantly, his San Francisco Giants and 49ers. Earl will always be remembered as a man who put others needs before his own. A selfless man we all loved and respected.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Wesley Ling, Sr. and Amy Grace Gardner and survived by his brother, Harry (Nat) of Otterville, MO. Earl is survived by his devoted wife Sylvia Kaskie-Ling of 18 years and his loving children Mary, Michael, Bob, Lisa, Brian, Robert (Tami), and Christine (Sean) and his phenomenal grandchildren Morgan, Spencer, Austin, Kelsey, Haley, Lauren, Paige, Anthony, and Caleb.

Please join us in paying tribute to Earl by attending his memorial service on Friday, March 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1135 12th Street, Sparks, Nevada. Internment at St. Paul's Episcopal Church will be at a later date with family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. Immediately following the service, the family will hold a celebration of his life at the home of Earl and Sylvia.

I had the pleasure of working with Earl for several years. Although our contact was only on the phone and through email, I was fortunate to get to know him. He was truly a remarkable man. I miss Earl’s wit, his wisdom, and most of all his wonderful sense of humor. My life has been enriched by knowing him. My condolences to his family in this difficult time.

The phrase, “Hale fellow well met” fit Earl perfectly. I had the pleasure to work with Earl for several years at KOLO-TV. Not only was he a consummate pro, he always brought a smile to my face whether just greeting him in the hallway, or working on a project with him. Whenever I had a new joke to try out, Earl’s office was always the first stop on my rounds. I will miss him greatly.
