Ely Haimowitz Obituary

Ely Haimowitz, Professor of Music Emeritus, University of Nevada Reno, died on November 15 at his home in Reno. He was 90.
Professor Haimowitz, a concert pianist, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 3, 1920. He began his musical studies at age ten. At 15 he won a full scholarship to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. After graduating with honors, he was awarded a fellowship at the Juilliard Graduate School in New York under Josef and Rosina Lhevinne. His studies were interrupted by the Second World War, during which he served as a cultural affairs officer in the U.S. Armed Forces in Korea, where he helped organize the first Korean Symphony Orchestra and other musical groups. He then returned to Juilliard where he earned his Master's Degree. In 1952 he met Valentin Pavlovsky, a Russian pianist who had been a close friend of Sergei Rachmaninoff and accompanist to Piatigorsky and other great artists. He studied with Pavlovsky for seven years and considered him his greatest teacher. His daughter, Valerie, is Valentin's namesake.
Ely Haimowitz's career as a pianist has included several tours of Europe and Asia and performances with the London Philharmonic, Seoul Radio Symphony, Miami Beach Symphony and other orchestras.
His family, his wife, Leonore, and daughter, Valerie, all moved from New York City to Reno in 1965, when he began teaching at UNR. He taught piano students, graduate and undergraduate, and Music Appreciation. He was passionate about communicating his love of music to the hundreds of students who took Music Appreciation. He often ran into former students who told him how much they had enjoyed his class.
In 1987 Mr. Haimowitz was invited to China to give recitals, master classes and lectures in several major cities. He subsequently toured China three more times.
He retired from UNR in 1996, and taught piano privately in Reno for thirteen more years.
Ely Haimowitz's wife Leonore died in 1996. His sister, Mildred Aronov, died in 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Valerie, of Reno; brother, Morris, of Oakland, Ca.; brother-in-law, Norman Kantor, of Fort Lee, N.J.; companion, Merry Anne Davis, of Reno; and nine nephews and nieces.
Thank you to Dr. Larry Noble, Jan-Louise, and all the staff at Reno Heart Physicians for your wonderful care of Professor Haimowitz.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Best way to get a reaction from Ely: suggest that G. Gould's tempo is refreshingly unique.

Got two pianos for duets and headphone action....not like Ely's humongous pianos in his basement.

My children continue to perform all due to the work the Ely did with this astounded student

His legacy continues

Mr. Haimowitz was my piano teacher when I was a little girl, in the 1950.s. When he was away, Mr Pavolovsky would teach me. He was an excellent teacher, patient, encouraging--and, I noticed even then, very handsome. I am sad to hear of his death, but from his obituary, I see what a good life he lived, following his passion for music.

I took lessons from Ely in the early 70's

He not only taught me to play music...but to truly listen to music. My life and heart has been deeply affected by the time I spent with this man.

I'll never forget him teaching me the word perspicacious.

Ely was very influential on my piano style when I took piano lessons from him at UNR in the 80s. He was tough, but in a good way. He taught me the art and craft of finger pressure, hand positioning, etc. to bring out that Romantic expressivity which was his forte. Off and on he'd tell me things about his interesting life. We former piano students perhaps should get together and do a "recital" in his honor, playing something he taught us while taking piano lessons from him. How to make that happen...

Ely is responsible for making many people whole. Once, about 30 yrs ago, he helped a young and very talented musician who suffered a very traumatic spinal cord injury to "get over it". That young man went on to law school and eventually became one of Reno's finest Judges. He'll be missed indeed.

I learned more from Dr. Haimovitz, up at UNR than any other teacher. He opened my eyes to so many things. When he played Jacqueline Dupree, I could hear in her music that I had Multiple Scelrosis...I was diagnosed the following year. He was a great man, and I will never forget him. I loved talking music and politics with Ely. We were on the same page in so many areas. His amazing background and wealth of experiences were shared on many memorable occasions. He will be missed.

I took Music Appreciation from Professor Haimowitz shortly before he retired and it remains one of my favorite classes to this day. He taught me to really hear music and greatly increased my enjoyment of both recorded music and live performance. I stayed in touch with Ely afterward and I had planned to attend a concert of his in Nightingale Concert Hall. Unfortunately it had to be cancelled because of his wife's illness and he was never able to reschedule it. He was a gifted musician and a great teacher. Colleen Morgan
