James Michael Imperial

5/29/46

5/12/16

James Michael Imperial was born May 29, 1946 in French Camp, CA. He was called home May 12, 2016 in Sun Valley, NV. He is survived by wife, Donna Imperial; children and their spouses: Bernadette, Justine and William Imperial, all of Manteca, CA; Joey Imperial, Reno, NV and wife Claudia; Michael Imperial, Sparks, NV and wife Jill; Roxanne Kumar, Sparks, NV and husband Roman; Branden Imperial, Red Rock, NV and wife Kim; Laraine Buchanan, McKenzie, TN; grandchildren: Tyler, Carter, Mariah, Carista, Kiera, Brianna, Kayla, Anthony, Travis, Monique, D'Angelo, Jasmine, Krishna, Branden; great- grandson Josiah; siblings: Robert Imperial, Raleigh, NC & Robin Imperial, Washington, DC; 9 nieces, 3 nephews, numerous cousins & in-laws. Mike was predeceased by his father, Bert Leon Imperial, mother Justine Gadsden, brother Ronald Imperial, half-brother Mark Gadsden, nephew Ronald Imperial, Jr., sister-in-law Jeannie Imperial and brother-in-law Buck Chisenhall.

Mike grew up in California; he was the favorite of his paternal grandmother, Isabel. He was the oldest son in a family of four (a younger half-brother was born after he had reached adulthood). Mike and his brother Ronnie spent a lot of time together since they were only three years apart. Mike attended Manteca Union High School, but interrupted his education to enlist in the Army. He served his country during two tours of duty in Vietnam; that experience changed his life forever.

Mike married Bernadette Jean Perry while serving in the Army. They had 3 children: Peanut (Bernadette Jean), Justine and William. All three children live in Manteca, CA. Mike married Katie in 1974; they were together for 23 years. They had 4 children: Joey, Michael, Roxanne and Branden. In 1996, Mike married Donna O'Day. He became stepfather to Donna's daughter, Laraine.

Mike was a cement mason by trade. He worked for Valley Concrete in Reno for 39 years. He retired from Scott Meek and Son Concrete in 2012. He made many lifelong work friends and affectionately referred to his co-workers as construction dinks.

When he was not working to support his family, he loved to hunt and fish. There were lots of excursions that included brother Ronnie and both brothers' kids (and sometimes wives). There were many years he and brother Ronnie both had deer tags. They didn't just hunt and fish for sport; they ate what they shot or caught. Pyramid Lake and the Truckee were favorite spots for trout fishing. Mike liked woodworking projects, never met a car problem he couldn't resolve, and had a knack for photography, both digital and print. He and brother Ronnie often competed for who could take the best photo.

In retirement, he spent a lot of time with his grandchildren and stayed in touch with his brother Bob and sister Robin by text, phone or email. In recent years, he became engrossed in watching YouTube videos on every imaginable subject. Mike was a devoted son and took care of and visited his mother who had dementia and lived in a group home in Reno. She passed just 31 days before his death. Mike was a loyal, kind, and affectionate man with a slightly twisted sense of humor; wonderful son, cherished brother, crazy uncle, loving husband and father; and doting grandfather. Memorial service to be held Friday, May 27, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 14 Veterans Way, Fernley, NV 89408. Repast will follow at Hidden Valley Country Club at 3575 Hidden Valley Drive, Reno, NV 89502. Flowers may be sent to Hidden Valley Country Club. Condolences may be sent to the Imperial Family, PO Box 1520, Sparks, NV 89432. We all love and miss you Mike, Dad, Grandpa. Rest in peace.

Dear Michael, some 65 or so years ago our mothers met at my Tias house down the block from your grandpa and gramma's, and became fast forever friends...And our family size increased in love and laughter. Going thru tough times together brought us close. Our marriages, children, family losses and war didn't change our friendship. Sharing pics and stories of our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren kept us connected. I'm grateful and proud for knowing you and will love you always. Hugs

I will miss you dearly. I know one day the empty space caused by your passing will be filled with joy and peace from the memories you left behind but the grief is still creating a void that for now is too deep for words or oral expression. I have spent the first 38 years of my life with you and now I will spend the rest of my life reflecting on that blessing and on how incredibly short your time with us was. I love you Dad more than my words could possibly express. Axel ❤

Looking back I know that every time I hung out with my grandpa the only time I cried was when he picked out a sad sappy movie. So when I was going through his belongings the day after he passed and found his iPod shuffle I should have know it would have songs like So What by Pink all the way to pieces like Canon in D minor. Out of everything I remember about the infamous James Michael Imperial I will remember three things; it's boring to be normal, never give up on family, and kaka. And even if youre not here right now grandpa you will still be with me on my 21st birthday to ask "so you're 21 now, right?" And I'll finally be able to respond with "Yes." I love you grandpa.

I remember the times that my Grandfather and I would watch movies. He had a rather wacky or zany taste in movies. It makes me laugh when I think back to all the weird movies he had us watch, after the movie I'd say to my self: "What did I just witness?" Or "Can I have those two hours back please?". But in the end it was well worth the watch, because I was able to spend time with him. He would always want to spend time with all of his grandchildren individually, making sure he gave each grandchild his undivided attention. He'd ask me if I wanted to go out on the weekends, if I could we'd usally go eat Vietnamese food or eat at Rosie's at the Nugget. After which, we'd visit my great-grandma Tina, who just recently passed as well.
I recall one summer when he was invited over to watch me when i was little. I remember teaching him how to play video games, we would play games like Halo or Gears of War. He always loved saying "Caca" and "Cochino" for some odd reason. It always made my cousins and I laugh. He had a "Cochino" sense of humor as he would put it. I find that that sense of humor was passed down to my uncles,my father, and I. I miss him so very much. Rest in peace Grandpa, we will all miss you...

Mike, Jill, Anthony, Travis, and the rest of the Imperial Family,

Kody and I are so sorry for your loss. Although I didn't have a chance to meet Mike, Kody did and he was touched by him in their only meeting. While reading all that has been written about Mike he left a lasting impression on everyone in his family, his friends, and those he came in contact with. Im sorry I didn't get a chance to meet him. He will be greatly missed by all.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew Mike and who are going to miss all of the unique qualities he brought to your lives. He will live on in each one of you.
God Bless You,
Donna and Kody

Prayers to the Imperial family. Mike was a very nice man. This world is a little dimmer place now but the heavens got a little brighter.

...and all of a sudden you were gone.

Hey grandpa,
It still doesn't seem real to me. I keep thinking that we will get that part in my car to sell it, or that we will go out and pick out crazy movies to watch. I'm going to miss trying to hide from the camera as you take crazy pictures of all the grandkids and I. I'm gonna miss you telling me how it's hard to remember me because I'm never around. I wish I could've changed that before you had to leave us. I will never forget you. I love you. Thank you for being there at my graduation, it was the best surprise I got all day. I'm glad I was able to give you a rose. Thank you for being there on mother's day so we could all watch a movie together. You make the best commentary for any movie. Thank you for being around during Christmas at my dad's house. It really made Christmas merrier because you were able to share ceviche and deviled eggs with us. Thank you for everything. It won't be the same without you. Until we see you again, tell everyone I said hi. Give grandma Tina a great big hug for me.
Sincerely,
The granddaughter's face who you always seem to forget,
Mo

Grandpa/Dad,

We will always love you; you are forever in our hearts! We know you are in Paradise with loved ones and resting but your absence is greatly missed. We cherish all the times you've shared with each and everyone of us, your loving ways, your sardonic/wry humor and wit, having meals with you, exchanging philosophical repartee, watching movies until you fall asleep on the couch, fishing/hunting/hiking, working on the cars, going to museum or Rosie's, talking politics and religion, reminiscing about family and loved ones, listening to your eclectic taste in music, playing video games, watching YouTube videos with you, receiving your text messages and birthday/holiday wishes, spending holidays and quality time together, all of these and so much more! You were truly a renaissance man, an intellect as well as your everyday down to earth "dude", loved and admired by all... A humble hero with a big heart, a man's man who broke the mold...an inspiration in so many ways...my dad; my grandpa; my father-in-law; our friend and Hero... Until we meet again... We love and miss you!
