Michael Steinmann Obituary

Dr. Michael George

STEINMANN

September 8, 1946 to July 18, 2009

Dr. Michael George Steinmann, 62, of Reno, NV passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009. He was born on September 8, 1946 in New York, NY to George M. and Hildegard W. Steinmann.

As a youth, Michael was raised by his parents and maternal grandmother, Sophie Wirth in Gaylordsville, CT where he attended the Little Red Schoolhouse, the nation's last one-room school house functioning as an actual school. Michael went on to complete a Bachelor's in International Relations and a Masters in American Government from California State University, Sacramento. Michael also earned a Master's in Public Administration and a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Reno. Finally, Dr. Steinmann received his Doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, graduating in 2005. Professionally, Michael enjoyed serving the public with the Edmonton City Planning Commission and then the Provincial Archives, both in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, early in his career. Michael also taught at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, the University of New Brunswick, Saint John, and the University of Nevada, Reno. Later, Michael finished his professional career at the Nevada Department of Prisons in Carson City, NV. Prior to both his academic and professional pursuits, Michael also served in the Air Force, where he finished his service to his country with an honorable discharge in 1966.

More important to Michael than either his academic and professional accomplishments was the deep and unwavering love and support he had, and will forever have, for his surviving wife, Stephanie Steinmann, and his two surviving children, Frederick A. Steinmann and Gordon J. Steinmann. Although Michael was preceded in death by both his parents and his younger brother, Peter Steinmann, Michael is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Sokol and her children. Michael is also survived by his younger sister, Carol Goodley of Allentown, PA and youngest sister Joan Mickus and her husband, Tom of Superior, CO. Finally, Michael is also survived by his beloved brother-in-law, John Tkaczyk of Edmonton, Alberta, Stephanie's younger brother, and is also survived by his nephew, James Goodley of Alexandria, VA, son of Carol Goodley.

Michael's remaining family wishes to extend their heartfelt invitation to their and Michael's family, friends, and colleagues to join with them for a viewing to be held on Friday, July 24, 2009 at Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Avenue, at the corner of W. Fourth Street and Stoker Avenue in Reno, NV. The viewing will run from 3 to 7 p.m. A further invitation is extended to all to celebrate Michael's life and legacy by attending Michael's funeral and service to be held on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1900 1st Street, at the corner of Richards Way and 1st Street in Sparks, NV. Committal will occur immediately following the service on July 25, 2009 at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno, NV. A reception will then be held immediately after the committal at the rectory of Our Savior Lutheran Church back in Sparks.

The family asks that cards and correspondence of condolences be sent to: The Steinmann Family, PO Box 51262, Sparks, NV, 89435. The family also asks that those wishing to give a gift in Michael's name give to the following organizations and charities Michael quietly, but with deep regard and affection for, gave to in life: Our Savior Lutheran Church; College of Business Alumni Association University of Nevada, Reno; USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development "Annual Fund"; and the Renown Health Foundation.

Above all, Michael was a loving and caring husband and father. His wife and two children will always cherish his memory and the joy and enhancement he brought to their daily lives. For them, the world is both brighter for his memory and a little darker with his departure.

Dear Stephanie,
I just heard the news today about your loss. I was in shock, I could not believed it. I really never met your husband but with the stories you told me about him I felt like I knew him. I wish that I could give you a big hug right now. I will be praying for you and for your entire family so that God helps you through this hard time. Just remember that I'm here for you if you need anything.
Love,

We will miss Mike's almost-weekly visits to the office, bringing us news on the economy, articles for us to read, and candies and chocolate from Hawaii. Mike made us feel we were part of his family, and he will be truly missed. We are so sorry for your loss.
