Charles Gavitt Obituary

Charles Henry "Chick" Gavitt Jr., 48, of West Kingston died May 3, 2015 after battling brain cancer. He was born March 3, 1967 in Westerly, the son of Charles Henry "Chick" Gavitt Sr. and Dorothy (Turcotte) Gavitt. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Rhode Island in 2005, where he earned his B.A. in History, Secondary Education, and a minor in Asian Studies.
Kyoshi Chick Gavitt was a 30 year veteran of the martial arts and the founder of Ichiban Karate and Kickboxing Studio in Wakefield, R.I. since it opened in 1991. He held a 7th degree Black Belt in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Shidokan, a 3rd degree Black Belt in Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan, and a 3rd degree Black Belt in Okinawan Weapons. Kyoshi Gavitt was named RI Director of Shorin-Ryu Shidokan in June 1993. Gavitt was awarded his 7th Degree and Kyoshi title in April 2007. In September 2004, Kyoshi Gavitt was named RI Faculty Member of the National School Support Network (NSSN), a branch of the National Association of Professional Martial Arts (NAPMA). He was one of only 200 Budokon Instructors in the world. Kyoshi Gavitt was also a certified Boot Camp Instructor, Cardio Kickboxing Instructor, TRX certified trainer, Level 1 Muay Thai Teacher, and a Level 2 MMA Fitness Trainer.
Chick was also very active in the community. In August 2006, Chick received a Gubernatorial Citation from Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri for his work in the community. He was part of the South Kingstown Cares organization as well as President of the Wakefield Downtown Merchants Association. Because of this kind of involvement, the Ichiban community has always been active in local events. The family would like to thank all of the friends for their overwhelming love and support as they helped Chick and his family during the past two years. The outpouring of support was unparalleled.
Chick is survived by his life companion, Victoria Lynn Bartlett, and their children, Elloise Grace Gavitt, 3, and Jaxson Charles Gavitt, 1. He also leaves his sister, Marlo Joan Logan, her husband, David Badger Logan, and Chick's nephew, Aiden Charles Logan,11, all of Arlington, Va.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Road, Kingston, R.I. Visiting hours are at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield , R.I., Thursday, 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Karate Instruction Assistance Initiative (KIAI), PO Box 274, Wakefield, RI 02880. Chick, hard to believe we lost you 5 years ago, it seems like only yesterday. There's no understanding why such a talented, friendly, outgoing, personable, giving person like yourself is taken from us at such a young age?!? You left such a hole in all of our lives that will never be filled. I'm sure your at a better place instructing others how to be better people and training them in Shorin-Ryu Shidokan. Till we meet again my brother, my thoughts and prayers are with you always......

Chick you have always been a member of our family. I've missed not seeing you in recent years because of our busy schedules but you've always been in my thoughts and prayers and you always will be. You've always been more than a friend, you've been a brother, and my heart aches at your loss. Till we meet again my brother, I will never forget you....

Kyoshi, we are honored to have known you. Thank you for the discipline you instilled, the love of karate, your dojo that welcomed our family in and touched our hearts when we had to move(to Japan!)
In Japanese, matane(mah-tah-neh), rather "see you later" is easier to say than goodbye... Matane Kyoshi...we'll see you again.

Chickie was a happy child full of sunshine and song. He was the composer of our family song The Magic Garden which I sang to my children and now to my grandchildren. My sister Dottie and our mother Memae Gillard were so proud of their boy! We send our sympathy, love and prayers to Victoria, his children and Marlo. Love, Auntie Linda , Trina, Andrea Nicole and families. God rest Chickies soul.

Chick, as I see from all of the comments online, you have touched many lives here. You have gone a long way from westerly even if not physically. I know that you are teaching karate in heaven and with your parents, but just know that you are missed here. I hope to see you again someday. Peace my friend

Chick was such a giant, but had a kind soul. My daughter had her birthday party at the studio, and Chick came by with a dozen roses. He was so thoughtful and kind. We will never forget him. Rip. The Cronin Family

Words can not describe this great lose of a great man and just plain "good guy"

May 5, 2015

Words cannot adequately express my feelings. Chick touched the lives of so many people in his short time here and I consider myself and my family very blessed to have been able to be a part of his life. May God watch over his family and keep them strong. Remember there are a lot of people who will always be there for you.
