Thomas J. "Tom" Walsh

1925 - 2015

Thomas J. Walsh, 89, of 200 Clarke Road, Narragansett, R.I. passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 20, 2015 while vacationing in Palm Beach, Fla. He was the husband of the late Joan E. Walsh. He leaves four children, Linda M. Oden of Richmond, R.I.; Patricia A. Lafond of Merrimack, N.H.; Mark T. Walsh of Andover, Mass.; and Karen E. Howard of Sugargrove, Pa. Tom also leaves six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his companion, Jeanne McKenna of Norwell, Mass.
Thomas was born on Nov. 30, 1925 in Somerville, Mass. and entered the United States Navy in 1942, serving on the hospital ship Benevolence. After the war, he served in the merchant marines and then attended the University of Hartford, graduating in 1949. Thomas entered the field of fire protection engineering and in 1973, founded the engineering firm, Walsh Engineering, which he ran until he retired in 1997. In retirement he pursued many other interests, including web design, writing and publishing books, and traveling. He was an avid beach lover, spending his summers at Bonnet Shores Beach Club and winters at Palm Beach, Fla. An avid photographer, Tom chronologized his life and that of his family, starting with his experiences during World War II and up to the present.
A ceremony of Military Honors will be held at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, R.I. on April 30, 2015 at 11:45 a.m. Anyone wishing to attend is requested to meet at the administration building at 11:45 a.m. to join the procession.
